Please Please Please change the cover for "When a Mage Revolts"! It is horrible, it looks like some 19th century alt-history fantasy novel, only with someone who has magic.

This snippet from the Solarmadnes review on webnovel.com pretty much sums it up:
... THE GOD DAM COVER PICTURE IS DOWN RIGHT AWFUL, like it bothers me so much. It looks to out of place, why you ask? because it looks like someone took the picture of Napoleon and added him a staff......

It really does look like a painting of some battle in the early 19th century by Napoleon's French Army (Battle of Waterloo for example). Every time I've thought about reading it, the cover pretty much drives me away! It's bloody awful!

French Romanticism Art doesn't seem a very good fit for the cover.

Please change the cover. Famous French National Paintings are a horrible idea for a cover. I would argue any Famous National Paintings would be a horrendous idea! The actual painting is in the Louvre

It also may create some legal liability since under French Law you are using a famous modified art image for profit!

Feel free to compare for yourself.


Had a discussion with @CKtalon and he doesn't see anything wrong with it and suggested I contact the French government. So that's what I'll do I guess, probably a few other sites :)

        Billdoor It is in public domain so I doubt there is any real legal case, but the optics are horrible. The cover is horrible.

        I don't really understand who decided it was a good cover to use to begin with! It is full of shitty graphic edits, the head doesn't look right, the musket turned "staff" clearly has the ram rod visible. The hammer is still partially visible. The hat looks like shit. The person on their hand & knees looks like they are about to give a blowjob! The person in the French hat on the left looks like he just walked into an orgy or cat-house , all wide-eyed in excitement.

        I could go on. It's just that bad. It is a horrendous, abhorrent cover. How can Qidian decide to make a mockery of what is a symbol of French freedom.

            checkm8 I just joked on discord that I could make a better picture using paint... and then everything was clear... qidian's job description probably wasn't graphic designer, only paint user.

            you are right the cover looks awful and probably doesn't even reflect the novel at all

              Actually spoke with the editor lead for When a Mage Revolts and he said cover design is completely decided by Qidian International management.

              He said he would forward the complaint to about the cover to Qidian.

              Hopefully something will happen, but tbh I will not be betting on it.

                The cover has been changed to the original one. Rejoice everyone!

                  Hurrah! Just noticed the cover was changed! Glad to see that Qidian occasionally listens:)
