Usually you get 5 ss or so for checking in and exp points but today I got no ss. Is that normal or not?

Yeah. Unfortunately it's random what you get. I've gotten nothing but experience multiple times. I think I've also gotten power stones a few times. Completely useless check in bonuses.

Check-in rewards are random now... Sometimes SS, sometimes PS, sometimes EXP, sometimes SS+EXP
