  • How long does it take you to write 1 chapter?

Depends on the concentration. Music helps concentrate.
Once i had many ideas and wrote almost 1.5k in an hour.
It usually takes me an hour to write a 1k chapter, but if i keep loosing focus it lasts about 2.
I'm setting a goal of writing 5k a day for now.

ThyUnknownSaint depends on your creativity mind and the speed of text you can type both on your laptop or smartphone device.

I used both and I used typing as well as voice dictating once my thumbs or fingers are too sore to click or type.

I usually write 2k words per chapter and on a good day and evening, I would churn out at least 4 to 8 chapters, proof read them, the plot et cetera and proof checks on grammatical errors.

Yup, that's me if you have a lot of time in your hands, no kids and all that stuff.

    Cheerio

ThyUnknownSaint never timed it to be honest. I guess in one sitting, likely 2 days. It's impossible for me to do daily updates and I wouldn't for the sake of just pumping out a chapter. They're my jigsaw pieces to a big picture, so the fit has to be right.

I revise as I go and frequently, especially when the book is complete.

ThyUnknownSaint my chapters really range in length, so it depends on the length of the chapter tbh. for 800-900 word chapters, only about an hour and a half, but for 1000-1500 word chapters, around two hours. for those rare 1500-2500 word chapters, around three hours. & ofc, this is all w/ just quick editing by reading through it once to get rid of those basic mistakes.

depends on my mood and creativity in the day, if everything is above normal, I take about an hour to write a chapter with 1200 - 1500 words.

If there's a problem like procrastination or something, I'll take two or three hours

Oh man it really depends on what else is going on in life and my general mood.

I agree with some other posters that if it's a good day, you sit down with some nice music and can just type away then there we go. Chapter or 5 is done in a binge session. Save those chapters for editing/polishing and release steadily.

But for the most part that's not how life works. You have school work, family, and all these obligations to fufill. You also need personal time for yourself for your own hobbies and just life in general. Non-professional writers who can consistently churn out quality chapters for daily updates are superhuman by my standard.

So depends on what life wants to throw me that day- will I get this chapter next finished in a few hours or eternity? Who knows, certainly not me.

Depends on the type of story for me. For instance, the only novel I consider a serious work of writing is my mainly Fantasy MWTL story mixed with a slew of other equally important genres. The thought process and language quality on this one is definitely mich higher than my others. Even if I don’t include the lengthy rewrite process of my first two dozen chapters which boosted the word count by 10k, or the years of planning out and sketching characters and other graphics before I even began typing it on my computer, this one still takes more time on average than my causal or semi-serious writing. Approx.: 3-4 hours for 1.5-2k word chapter.

While my other romance sci-fi fantasy about reincarnating as tree due to a contest prompt is not the same level of writing quality, because it’s a System novel, I spend way more time calculating math that makes leveling growth logical as well as other facets like skills. Thus, oddly enough, this takes longer overall if the chapter has more game content than story content; even though, the writing portions are shorter. Approx.: 2-4 hours for 1-2k word chapter.

My last is the most casual, a fan fiction. This one took some research of real world events and times/schedules, so like the tree story it was longer for such sections requiring references. Those that didn’t, a 1k+ chapter could take only an hour. With it, maybe add up to another hour.

I personally feel I write much too slow, especially with the first serious one. There’re so many allusions, easter eggs, and overall more symbolism in that story which makes it tricky to keep tightly togther so that the plot unfolds how I want. Not to mention, visual imagery and human struggle are super important for the world vision I have for it, so I sometimes just sit and stare at the screen while brooding upon it. XD

Edit: Fudge. This came put way longer than I intended or imagined. I wrote a freakin’ rambling essay. 😅

Full multi-page essays are still not enough to describe how frustrating writing/editing chapters can feel. Especially when it comes down to details! And making things connect or make sense. The contents of course vary per writer but like- moooood.

Hmm depends for me... I am a very weird writer. I cannot ever force myself to write, it turns out absolutely horrible. However, I am consistent when I do write. Binging, it would be like 3 chapters for 5-6 hours work inc!using editing, formatting for mobile and such.
I mean, my now hiatus'd book (rewrite being planned) released chapters in batches of 3 or 4 in the span of a day (all nighters). I also have school and other interests so I don't actually even plan much (which I must do to write properly these days) soo...

Two to three days at least, five to six at most. But if I feel like rushing things. I can do a two thousand word chapter in three hours.

1500-2000 words in about an hour and a half. Revision about half an hour.
