Criticism is important and can lead to improvement but never let criticism force you into believing you're not good enough.

So, how do you identify the constructive criticism?

Constructive criticism doesn't shut a door.
- "You're disgusting!" - not constructive
- "Dude, that finger-chewing habit is nasty." - constructive
- "XYZ is a total scammer! Avoid!" - not constructive
- "I was disappointed that I couldn't get a refund when I found that Product Z wasn't compatible with my operating system." - constructive

Constructive criticism pinpoints a specific service failure and doesn't devolve into an ad hominem attack on the provider.

Mind your word if you're going to criticize an author's work.

Thanks.

Mavislin11 depends on how the person phrased it. If he just said that it was boring and confusing w/o justifying why, then that's not constructive. But if the person did justify and tell the reason why, then for me, it's constructive. 😀

Mavislin11 It depends on whether something else follows. In this form, I'd see this comment as criticism/opinion. So, not really something to take to heart since everyone has their own tastes and interest triggers.

The difference in feedback as I see it:

      • Constructive Feedback = offers something of value for consideration. A reader provides an objective viewpoint that may point out grammar errors, generally offer insights for growth and validation of what is seen working well. Strong partnerships are can be formed this way. Good feedback expands minds with ideas not close them down with depression.

      • Criticism/Opinion = a personal perspective that is at most times subjective. Doesn't give any value other than a personal honest opinion. The keys word here are "subjective" and "personal".

      • Destructive Review = a personal perspective that degrades the writer's work and sometimes the writer themselves. Typically, the reviewer is not aware of their "tough love" opinion to be damaging. Sometimes feedback can be a form of retaliation to something. The author doesn't even need to have done anything wrong, but write on something to trigger such feedback like a BTS fanfic. Reader wars can start this way.

I've experienced all forms of these. I would say that Constructive Feedback is the best form.

Veronica8 You are very good, I always admired your comments on the forum. I think I understand a lot of things about reviews now

Veronica8 the person just kept that the work was confusing and boring, and then says I'm being to defesive or looking for 5 star review. You can take a look under my book. I feel its quite unfair, as compared to the other feedback which was much more useful to me.

Mavislin11 feedback like this hits hard. Sorry, long reply. Hopefully this helps.

The way I've coped with this

          • Step away to calm and refresh.
          • Return to the book and see all the positives first.
          • Take note of all the good things said.
          • Look at that other review without emotion.
          • Does this review outweigh the positive/valuable noted? Is there something of value here? If both is no, ignore it and continue on.

Also with handling negative feelings reviews, I've found the best approach is either not respond to them or a short thank you for your time.

The goal here is to not make that review an obvious sore thumb.

Rather place focus on the valuable positive reviews without deleting any.

How do I do that? We have a pin button. I've pinned my best 3 reviews that informs the reader well so they shouldn't need to look for others (fingers crossed) . I've updated my summary and book cover if I have to.

I hope this one experience doesn't stop you from continuing the story. Keep at it. Your story is a unique gem here.

Veronica8 thanks so much. I feel its quite unfair for that person to call my novel boring when the fella does not give me advise on how to work on it or no signs of praise.

Your words means a lot to me, thanks.
