yaoyueyi suppose people don't pay to read do we still get paid for signing contract ?
Is signing up a contract with webnovel really that bad?

I just wanted to say ... I absolutely love your answer. It's realistic and to the point but not many would realise the truth of your post.
Deleteduser87 before I signed the very first thing I asked was “will I still keep my copyrights?” In which they responded yes. That means I’m still able to distribute my story on other platform and I got that response in writing, contract or not. Ask questions if you’re not sure. My issue now is that I’ve emailed my editor for updates and I’ve been ghosted. It actually goes against their clause in the contract itself. If I’m going to work with you, I would expect the very least to be sent updates. It’s just common curtesy since I’m giving you permission to publish and distribute my story on your platform.
How I deal with people who ghost. This is what I wrote. “I haven’t heard back from you for a while so I assume that you are no longer interested in my story. In that case I would like to withdraw the contract and my consent to let you edit and publish my story on my platform. I appreciate that my content may not be suitable for every platform and apologise that it didn’t work out”. And that’s the end of that. Contract withdrawn, I wrote it in writing. There are many other publishers out there who will work with you and not “ghost” you. Luckily I sat down and read the contract beforehand. Mine is a non exclusive so I’m basically only giving them permission to edit and distribute while I still retain my rights. As for royalties. Well, I’m not expected to make any more than $5 a month but I write for fun so it really doesn’t bother me.
Hope this helps x

writing for fun
not expected to earn more than 5$/month
Well... You are burning my brain cells so much just to let me read those.
"DoNt R34D Th3n?!?1?1?1?1?1"
I will give you good advice if you want to earn but write for fun.
Get yourself an IRL job and never come back anymore and write on your own blog!
really, man. Nothing could be treated as "For fun" anymore once you are really into something that will pay you.
officialjosiej You're better off with Patreon man. Lol. Do you even read the non-exclusive in details?
Contract questions are like the new privilege post on the forums these days.
I've read through the contract and the obligations section is a bit more loose than bigger publishing houses. I've rejected contracts before - and it's always okay to do so. If you're unsure, go with your gut.
Okay one thing to point out, " caluse 2.5 - protects the emobiment of your work and it looks like they cannot just change your work without letting you know. You can choose to unplublish your work or allow the changes.
Changes would only be made to comply with any specific countries laws and won't affect the original body of work (all publishers do this). Even so any potential changes don't just go live on their own, they state in the contract that you will be informed (and that's when you can decide to change something yourself OR pull that chapter).
Your moral rights are protected:
What Are Moral Rights?
the right of attribution of authorship;
the right against false attribution of authorship; and.
the right of integrity of authorship (i.e. the right to keep your work free from derogatory treatment).
You gain 50% of the revenue for every instance of income except fan works, then it's 10%.
There are no penalties for choosing not to continue your story, UNLESS you sign an addedum gaurunteeing additions (this is common in literary contracts as well).
If anyone were to claim your story is plagairism - Webnovel can defend themselves in court - if you're found guilty of theft or plagairism you owe back 100% of your income (this is standard for any publisher).
The only thing that's not 100% clear is the film rights. Everything else isn't in the least predatory.
advertising via webnovel is free. Going to court with them against someone who's stolen your work is also free. They protect both you and their own property rights.
The 50/50 copyright ends after 95yrs (also standard. Though most publishing houses will NOT give you 50% rights lol)
