_Petrified_ It’s quite an enjoyable process, at least for me. When doing a review swap on this Forum, you:
1.) Like and reply to the message of someone asking for a review swap. In your reply, you tell them that you would be interested in doing a review swap with them and copy and paste the link to your novel in that same message.
2.) Wait for them to reply to your message before you review their work or you risk never getting a review back. Also, some author’s feel a bit overwhelmed when people review their work and expect for a review in return without having been contacted first. I’m not picky about it and actually enjoy the thrill of unexpected reviews but it’s best to stay respectful of everyone.
3.) Usually, the person asking for a review swap has also added the link to their novel in the message that asks for a review swap. If they have not, kindly ask them to respond to your message with the link to their book as well. If they have, click the link. If you’re on a laptop, you can instantly begin reading their novel. If you’re on your phone, I suggest seeing the details of their novel (name and author) and returning to the main app to read it instead of reading it on the Forum.
4.) Once you have read as much of their novel as you wish (at least 3 chapters is my general rule but more is always best), return to the home page of their novel. Scroll down and you will find the section to ‘Review their novel’ or something along those lines. Click on it. It should pop up an option tab. Fill in your star rating and write up your feelings and thoughts about their book as well as anything you think they can improve on. N.B. Always be kind when addressing their work. Never insult an author. They have worked hard and it is painful when other’s reject their ideas/ writing.
4.) Submit your review.
5.) Return to the forum and tell them you have completed reviewing their work and say a little something about what you enjoyed about their book (just to boost their confidence! We’re in tough times).
6.) You can continue to respond to review swap requests or now begin asking if anyone would like to review your work too.
More information:
There are no real rules to review swapping except that if someone reviews your novel after you have agreed to do a review swap, you must review theirs too. I just gave you a skeletal outline of how I do review swaps but you can always mix it up! Most people just read around the thread to see how others have done it but I hope that this step by step plan has made you less ‘petrified’ You’re in a community of really nice (often burnt out) people so don’t be afraid to experiment.
