Hello!

I was curious about everyone's thoughts on the length of chapters. Do you think an author should keep them consistent, or do you enjoy getting that one long chapter every so often?

I'm writing out the next chapter of my book, and I noticed that the word count is almost double what my last two chapters were, and I am not done yet! Everything that I am writing in this chapter should stick together, but I was curious what everyone else thought about chapter lengths.

[unknown] For me I vary in my own rule when it's writing and chapter lengths. I assign each book of minimum capacity of words like:

    Warning Dew Drop
    Minimum: 1300
    Maximum: 1700
    Hannah:
    Minimum: 1400
    Maximum: 1900
    Twelve Years Back
    Minimum: 1350
    Maximum: 1800
    The Meeting Place
    Minimum: 1500
    Maximum: 2000

keulijeu That's a good thing to have I'm sure! My last chapter was a little over 1300 words, but this chapter is over 2500 words. I just couldn't stop writing for this chapter!

[unknown] Wow! That's so many! I'll check your book later😁 I wanna see the efforts you placed in creating such chapter, well, maybe after I write my books😆

[unknown] When it needs to be longer than other released chapters for some reason – it happens that my chapter is 2500 words long. Honestly, there is no average norm for writers to keep readers to read. Instead, if I really want to finish the chapter at a particular moment, then I just do not hesitate to release it with a length of 1000 words (or 3000, but frankly, such a number of words is not recommended if the writer could separate it.)

senshiAuthor Yeah, I kept wondering if I should cut it at one point and continue on the next chapter. However, I couldn't find a good place to stop it with what was happening in that chapter! So, I just continued until what was going on finished, haha.

keulijeu I would love to read your thoughts on my book! ❤️ I'm having a blast writing it, so much so that I've been hurting my sleep schedule lol.

Oh God...I don't know if this counts but I believe 3k+ words/chptr is just too much. I think 1,800 should be enough. Its preference though but when I see a book and decide to read but can't find the end of one chapter because it goes on like forever, I dump it. Not everyone has excess time to waste. I prefer to cover more ground quickly, it makes me happy.

Nerdy_Joker_101 i.e. i've got 1800 amount of words avg in my book. The chapters of it vary with 1000-3000 words. I don't know if that's ok, but seriously, each chapter must end with a particular moment that gives surface to the start of the next chapters.

Nerdy_Joker_101 I can understand your point! I like long chapters if they have a reason for it, and they are not just adding to a word count. I could probably cut my chapters down by doing fewer visuals, but I hate writing "he walked to the pavilion" and not adding how the surroundings are or if it's night/day. Hehe. That's just me, though.

senshiAuthor I agree with that! I was having too much fun writing these last few chapters so they both ended up being a little over 3k words, haha. I was able to find a point to cut this chapter a bit since I kept writing... So now it is 3024 words as opposed to 3224 words!

But, if I don't have the ending to a chapter written yet I'll just keep writing until I feel satisfied with that ending. I don't think I will go past 3k words though.
