    I would prefer to be useless but worth a lot in the eyes of other people (vain beauty) and strive to be useful than to be worthless but useful in the eyes of other people (convenient but easily replaced tool) and strive to be recognized.

    This one is equal, either you can give up or do your best and hope that this special someone will reciprocate your love.
    This one is equal, either you can reciprocate someone's love or tell that hopeless person to give up.
    Both situations are painful and hard to deal with, but if you see the 2nd one as way easier then your empathy level is lower than your selfishness (which is the mostly the case).
