Is there any way to turn off message notification in the main site? I get at least a dozen messages a day about gifts given to stories I have never read, and it is pretty annoying.

Lucred yeah, even I am quite frustrated from that feature as well, however there isn't any method to permanently mute them. If you want, you can use the mobile web version instead.
