I don't bother with the events personally. As such, I haven't had this problem myself. Still, from what you are describing, I would say that it is most likely that you are having the same problem as a lot of other people.
Look for posts on 'timer not working' and similar posts to see if there are any fixes in those.
I haven't found a fix yet, but there are a lot of these posts to go though.
I'll follow this post, and post back here if I find a fix.

I've looked though all the posts related to 'Time' I could find and no luck. It's all just other people saying they have the same problem (or 'Make money quick' scam posts).
Given that it is a widespread problem, it should be fixed soonish. The only problem is that it has been fixed before only to come back in the next patch from what I read in those posts.
