  • I really dislike that there are not enough genres under female lead, as a writer on this site/app, I want more to write about than just romance. I'd like to write fantasy or sci-fi books with my female lead, I'm not saying that female lead does not have these two genres, but as an example. It's very disappointing if I have to go reach under male lead for it or use a tag that no one seems to really read. It's even more frustrating to see the gap of genres provided for both genders, as if females do not read those same genres too. Even if data might say we choose less of other genres that is not romance or BL novel, this does not mean we do not write or read other genres at times.

  • I'm trying to write a book about a protagonist who is living in a cliche romance novel and comments on these cliche events/characters. Unfortunately, I've stop reading these romance for a while because my last brain cell wants to live. Therefore, I've made this discussion section to talk about different romance like Ceo/campus romance to shoujo/josei mangas. I also would like to discuss the different types of characters you see in these novel like the iceberg ml, the ditzy fl, or the strong independent fl, who is really not strong and independent.

    • Ouch! I think I cut myself reading all these edgy comments. By the way, do you read the originals? What genres were you looking for that disappointed you?

Ouran Host Club for crossdressing under the genderbender is definitely one of the best. She had a reason and a goal that didn't make gendbender
        just a cheap gimmick.

I was mostly ranting on about physically changing into another gender, but it's nice to see someone bringing up crossdressing. I think another good crossdressing anime was Princess Jellyfish, if you ever watch that one.

Also, there is slowly being a lot more crossdressing gimmicks used in web novels. Unfortunately, that also means people are making it a cliche and butchering it.

      • SrtaA Sure, I'll look at it and if I like it I'll support your story. I always love an original story, so I hope you the best in writing your story.

      • Dark_Scholars Saga of Tanya was a great one. Although I prefer the anime version over the manga and novel if I can be honest. I think the reason why Tanya was a great genderbender is because it didn't focus on fan service or romance, and I didn't lose any brain cell from watching it. What's your reason for liking the Saga of Tanya plot-wise, just curious to know.

        • ActiasLuna nana is actually shojo with mature content not actually josei. People get that confuse a lot.

          • This thread is to talk about the genderbender genre and Lgbt novels. Warning: I am a socially inept person with low eq so I can sound pretty rude when i don't want to most of the times, so be patient with me. Now, down to business.

I love genderbender genre because it's played for laugh magority of the time, and if you dig deep enough in a pile of trash you can find pretty heartwarming novels. What I don't like (it's more of a love/hate relationship) is genderbender in Lgbt books because it cheapens the experience of Lgbt and stories unique to only them. Oh, and the comedies usually suck. You can also tell that most of those writers are straight (nothing wrong with being a straight writer in this genre of course) but most of the straight writers whose books I've read felt like perverted fantasies. In my opinion, I would go so far to say it's an antithesis of Lgbt novels with the way writers use the genre. Let me explain.

Both gender change to the other sex: they are either uncomfortable in their new body for one or two chapters before they are used to their new body/ they were already comfortable from the very beginning. A lot of writers could have used that as an interesting story narrative of how it feels to be trapped in a different sex that you have no true understanding of, instead they use it for cheap gimmicks like using it as an excuse to fondle a potential love interest.

Male mc to girl: this one is the most disappointing one of it all for me. This one is usually found in Shounen/Yuri or Seinen /yuri, which are for male audience. (And no regular yuri are not mainly aimed for the male readers, you guys are just the equivalent of a rotten girl, join the club pats you a seat). An adult or mature guy turns to a girl, usually a minor who, 90% of the time in a story, are fondling themself or sexually taking advantage of little girl's who are minors, sometime women too. They even start playing Pokemon with them. Do I need to say more on why that's so disappointing?

Female Mc to Boy: They are equally if not less than perverted stories, but the difference is the mc being the victim instead of the perpetrator. Like any straight female romance story, the ml is a rapey-stalker guy, who cause majority of the problem by just breathing, if the evil family member is not already creating problems. And if it's a harem then the mc is a walking doormat bottom. How does it feel to be a woman in a man bodies, I don't know the mc is too busy getting sexually assaulted by ml for me to figure out.

While I did rant on how much genderbender are horrible mixed in with Lgbt novels there are some good ones and passable ones. Mostly, for the girl to boy ones. Not saying there are no good ones for boy to girl, but there is so few books that is worth mentioning that is not cringe-worthy, don't need to shut off your brain to enjoy, or feel like you are reading a book for pedophiles.

That being said, what is your opinion on these genre. we can talk about them together or just as a separate genre from one another.
