  • I stopped reading back in October because it was becoming too expensive, but I heard a rumor that a premium subscription or something might be coming soon. Is this true? Or are we still just buying SS to pay for stories? I can't find any premium stuff on the site.

    What's the deal?

    • Hey guys, one of my friends is working on a paper for his Technical Writing class and wanted to survey you guys, but didn't use the forums at all. So if you guys have the chance, please fill this out, it should only take a minute :)

      Thanks in advance!

      • WEBNOVEL_OFFICIAL That might work over in China, but here we get relatively few stories, so we don't really have a choice. There's no competition, so no market pressure to improve.

I love the stories and the service, but I think it's time for me to take a break from this website. It has become prohibitively expensive to the point of craziness. I think I've spent 3 dollars a day for the last 3 days, and I wouldn't be surprised if I've spent more than 50 dollars on here.

In terms of entertainment, I think I could have spent the money much better somewhere else. Hey, maybe if amazon does implement something like this, they will do it right.

In any case, I wish you all the best of luck, but I guess it's time to catch up on everything in my novelupdates library.

      • So, 8PM Mountain time for me, I guess let's see what we get up to! I hope there is community interaction and some live video stuff from people asking questions.

        • Just tried it on my alternate gmail, here's the error I get. It fades after a second, but clicking on the icon you click on to log in makes it come back.

          • I sent in a form as well. Here's to hoping that I get mod status!

            • I've been trying to invite friends, but they have no option to sign up, only to log in. If they log in with google or something like that, they get an error. I also do not get any SS. What gives? I've tried to invite like 4 friends at this point, but it never works.

              • Tugster What are you, a narc? Don't act superior over the internet unless there is a legitimate reason.

                • TLDR - a rant

Paperplane You haven't thought about what skills you're offering, and what skills translators offer. Fan translator or not, their skill is more valuable, original, and difficult than talking into a mic, recording it, and compiling the files. Fact.

Except it's not a fact, and I never claimed that contribution was more valuable in the first place. Just as translators study Chinese and English to be able to do what they do, I'm studying mixing, mastering, audio-production, and voice-techniques. I'm offended not because the TL job may be harder, but because you discounted my whole career path, in essence my whole life, as something inferior and unneeded. I don't have the skills to be a brilliant author, or to translate. Editing novels isn't my forte. But I'm good at audio-production and reading out loud, so this is just my way of giving back to the community.

I'm not going to write an original piece because I'm not an author, nor do I want to be. I'm an audio guy. Audio is my whole thing. And I can assure you that much more goes into audiobooks than you think.

Paperplane Having a voice, free time, editing skills, and motivation aren't very unique.

I would argue that having all of those things are fairly unique. And if what I'm doing is unethical, then most unliscenced fan translation is unethical. Fanfiction is unethical. Let's Play is unethical. Moreover, I'm investing my time for practically no return.

As for your argument that life is too short to waste time on being unoriginal, I can't disagree with that more. I would say that my interpretation adds a degree of originality to it, by transforming the work into a new medium.

Are people who voice act wasting their lives because they didn't write the scripts they are performing? Are wedding musicians wasting their lives because they perform music they didn't write?

You seem to think that what I'm doing will somehow harm the webnovel community, but I don't see how doing this could possibly hurt the community. Blind readers now have the option to avoid text to speech. Some people just prefer audiobooks.

Paperplane TL and editors love audiobooks too, but everybody needs to eat. I'm not asking for money

Paperplane I'm not asking for any money, but think; does any part of the money that goes into the patreons of the TL and editor also go to the author? I can't see how this would harm the TL or the Author's in any way. If anything, this helps them by providing their works in a more accessible format.

Paperplane Why should freelance translators have to put up with people who very publicly announces their intention to steal their work for profit?

Well, I'm not "stealing their work," I'm planning to adapt it, which I feel is an important distinction.

                  • Paperplane I don't see how a fan audiobook is any different from the original fan translations that started this whole thing. The translators aren't stealing the author's works, only adapting it. I'm not stealing the translators's work, only adapting it. I mean for it to be a kind of supplementary thing to the main translation, and it will probably be months until I catch up, if I ever even manage to with the rate that novels are translated on qi. And the very idea that I wouldn't work as hard on this as the translators and editors do is kind of offensive IMO. In fact, I'm probably going to give whatever I'm reading another edit just so that it works better when read out loud.

KoraL Yeah, I'm aware, so I've mostly been looking at really high quality translation with good english. I just wanted some suggestions to see what people would like. I believe in myself, and even if it's not good, I'm not hurting anyone :>
I'd love to sign a deal with Qidian and get paid to do these audiobooks, but that doesn't seem realistic right now. I'm just hoping that I make something good, and then see what happens from there.

PS If nobody actually suggests anything I'll just pick something from the newly released or popular lists.

                    • Hi guys, I've decided to start a new project where I take a webnovel from Qidian and make a fanmade audiobook from it! Right now though, I need your help!

What novel do you want turned into an audiobook? Put your suggestions below!

I'd rather choose a book that isn't insanely long and that has completed raws. I might also choose a book that is has recently started translation so that I don't have to work for months and months just to catch up. So it would be really nice if you could keep that in mind for suggestions, but post what you want and maybe I'll do it.

                      Cheers!

Edit: I put the novel pickup request tag in the tags because I want novel requests, but I just realized it wasn't meant for that, but I don't know how to edit tags. :<

                      • I just want to hear the music from the "Superstars of Tomorrow" universe. The whole concept just seems so crazy. An ultra-futuristic post-apocalyptic music producer reincarnating into the new world society to return to his pre-apocalyptic life of composing music. The music of that world would be so cool to listen to. And then past that, the whole world itself is amazing and unique itself.

                        :V

                        • It would also be nice so that we could report all of the exp spammers and force them to actually comment interesting things.

                          • Nice! I think you should spoiler all of those images though, they load really slowly and scrolling for so far is annoying.

                          • I disagree, there are so many of these, and they are generally all the same.

Loner MC is OP because of reasons and then makes friends, builds a harem, levels up, makes a bit of money, and receives international fame because for some reason the rest of the world suddenly cares about this game.

Something we actually need more of is slice-of-life and modern novels.

                            • I'm planning to do some fanmade audiobooks out of a couple of the new novels if I have time, hopefully that will tide you over :D
