This is all my guess but is the most logical one.

    What the two above me said. If a novel has gift function enabled and is an original, then it's only a matter of time before it goes premium since it's contracted.
    On that note, only gifts sent using paid spirit stones will actually result in the author getting money from the gift. The majority of gifts readers send use free spirit stones. I imagine most authors make the majority of their income from the premium chapters.

      The website should tell us the result of sending gifts then. It should mention under which conditions the author will get paid, that way maybe the readers will BUY Spirit Stones even.
