That leaves you with female leads sporting concrete for brains in order to be fearful of every potential rival the author introduces in the story.

Can it be done? Well, yeah, that's pretty much standard fare in Japanese shoujo romance manga. Decent guy -- block headaded girl.

My favorite romance is where my heart flutters when I see two people come to know each other despite imperfections and misunderstandings in a tip toe to a cascade progression of pulling two heartstrings together. In other words, a believable romance.

An example would be meeting someone with mutal interests and a personality that makes you comfortable; the encounters may only be once a week like at school or work shifts, but after a few solid conversations, you start realizing that you look forward to meeting that person that day of the week. You become increasingly conscious of that person as well as your actions and wonder if they have any significance. Then you start worrying, is it just kindness or true interest? Either side may be wondering whether the other will take another step or oh no, is that person even available?

Basically this describes a friendship which turns into crush. It’s simple, but I have yet to see ONE novel portray this age old happening. If someone knows of one, please do tell.
