【Important Announcement】Monthly Elite subscriptions adjustment
mng I fully know how big Tencent is. But sadly to say Qidian despite having Tencent as a parent company doesn’t exactly help them much. Adding into that point Webnovel (where we are subscribing too) I believe is a subsidiary of Qidian but they don’t get any direct funding from either Qidian or Tencent. The only thing they get is the rights to translate these novels. Of course prove me if I am wrong but, I have read somewhere on this forums that mentioned Webnovel being its own independent company despite being own by another company, they make their own rules and have to pay for everything themselves. So having Tencent as their head doesn’t exactly help. It’s like Supercell(makers of clash of clans), they are a subsidiary to Tencent but Tencent don’t have any decision or power making within Supercell. They neither have the obligation or need to put money into the company. While ITunes have the direct support of Apple since they are created by the developers of Apple. Since it is where some part of their profit comes from. They will have constant money flowing in to support the developers and the servers they run to keep it as a maximum efficiency. So comparing iTunes subscription to Webnovel’s subscription is completely unfair. By no means am I arguing that Webnovel’s subscription is cheap. But comparing a subsidiary company with the parenting or owning company not giving support to a tech giant’s main software is unrealistic. It’s like comparing a plastic fork with a gold fork.

SusshiRoll Thanks for the further details of your point. However, I think it is a little disingenuous to say: Tencent does not support Webnovel as much as Apple support iTunes, therefore it is understandable that their prices are higher. Tencent owns Webnovel, just like how Apple owns iTunes. Both parents profit from their creation. They are not non-profits or charities. Just because a parent company refuses to invest more money in an app or webpage does not mean that makes it understandable that their prices are higher. And when it comes to market share in Chinese Literature, Qidian has a higher market share than iPhones has on the mobile phone market or iTunes on the music industry. You are right that Tencent do not have an obligation to invest money into Qi (or Clash of Clans). But I do not think Apples has an obligation to invest money iTunes either. If any parent company invests money in a subsidiary it is because they choose to do so. It does not provide an excuse or reason for the subsidiary to charge high prices for their product. Some Chinese webnovel translation sites pay their translators and editors without a large parent company or any paywall/spirit stones, etc. Some of them have existed for longer than Webnovel and seem to still be surviving and some can even be said to be thriving and are adding more webnovels to their library.
On a slight tangent, even though I dont think whether Tencent invests alot of money and resources into Webnovel is a justification for high prices, I am also a little skeptical about the claim that Tencent does not support QI. If you have some supporting evidence I would be interested in seeing it. I do know Tencent has paid money to enter and grow in the web novel market. Tencent has made several purchases over the years (e.g. Qidian through Shanda Cloudary, Gravitytales) and they also produce television series and movies based on the works that they own the rights to. You might want to see Kings Avatar or other shows that have Tencent Penguin Pictures (a Chinese film distributor and production company, unsurprisingly owned by Tencent) prominently displayed in the credits. They also made an attempt to buy the rights to Korean novels, which I believe was also mentioned on this site. Even if they are not swimming in cash from Tencent, they do not seem to be short of funds or plans to expand their business.
