Yeah, I'm writing for a teenaged audience and play it out as if my readers are book consumers of the old school and in their thirties or older. Most definitely an error on my part. There is a lot implied, and (taking your example of forty years old as an example) what she says is probably what an adult would say and expect another adult to understand the way you interpreted it. However, you're absolutely correct in assuming that might not be how a reader interprets it.
The extremely early "chapters" are piggybacked onto the story afterwards. The first version started straight and had my readers go WTF! when one school-kid was implied to really be an adult totally out of the blue. By now it's too late, but I have this feeling I probably should have started the entire story with that fifty year something old guy experiencing funny crap and staring at his fourteen year old body in another world in disbelief.
