Their explanation makes no sense. Payment processing does not require GPS access. Location and payment method is handled by each platforms' respective payment processor (i.e. App Store on iOS) and I frankly do not see any reason for them to have access to location data: fortunately, you can just refuse access, but that doesn't preclude them from using other sketchy methods.
Also, their explanation here directly contradicts the reason stated in iOS (you have to explain why you want location access on iOS), which reads "This app requires your location to provide promotional services". That seems much more honest: they want to use your location for advertising and data mining.
singlespace I think part of it might be to see where people are reading (e.g. at home, on public transport, at the DMV, etc.) so they can use the information to curate novels (e.g. If you read on the bus it might recommend novels with bite-sized chapters for convenient reading but if you mainly read in bed it will offer novels with chunkier chapters for extended reading.) If they wanted to maximize user engagement it would be a decent idea.

feral_wolf Every time I open the app, I get a pop up asking me to "turn on the gps location for the app to get local content". But I don't want to do that, and I don't want to have to dismiss the pop up every single time I open the app. Is there a way to prevent that pop up from occurring?

MiddleEastern non_refert you are referring to the pop up that android uses, that have alow/deny options, if you deny it and set it to never show up again it would show you a new pop up at the bottom of the screen without any dismissing options.
