If you look at some of the highly rated novel and sort by recent, you will see the same person giving the novel 5 stars with spam message. They repeat this every few days which inflates the score. An example is Child of Light, which is rated 4.6.
Limit reviews to 1 per novel
You could also require the user to have X amount of time or chapters read in the novel. I can see the reverse happening where if the user is allowed only 1 review they spam their 1 review with a 5 star and bomb other novels with a 1 star.
A compromise would have to be made, one review per week would already be a good thing. You also have to give readers some freedom, otherwise they will just go elsewhere.
And then boosting is something that no one can stop, if the person who does it really wants to do it, there will just create double accounts on the site to go spam
blackboi 90% of the novels on wn are "rated" at 4+ stars due to the current policy.
Care to make a prediction at the numbers if your suggestion was implemented? XD
And yes like Kevhkhoo said the reader should for example have to read at least 5% of the novel or 20 chapters.
Implementing both would be great
But in reality, the reviewer reader doesnβt read anything at all, but simply looks at the previous review and makes a little of his own gag, squeezing out one or two lines. The commentaries within the chapters would give the authors an idea of what they actually read, understood the essence of the novel, or asked questions. And when just a review, without comment, the feeling that you as an author could simply be deceived. But never mind, life goes on, be happy that you can even write that someone reads you regularly.
How does making more than 1 review per novel even make sense? This is the first time iβve seen it happen. If the novel changes after your review, just edit it.
Gourmet_DAO So only positive reviews are needed?
If the novel is good the reviews will be good. Period.
Only other "authors" (lol) will bother to write fake 1 star or 2 star reviews. Not readers.
WN could just disallow review posts for accounts that use the same IP with an "author's" account.
Done
Easy
xcares For example, I have positive swap reviews for 5 and 4 stars, there are honest reviews for 3 stars .. True, I received three reviews for 1 star. Because my English is not so good, they did not read the content, they looked only at the text, they were candy wrappers of the English language. What to do English is my third language. When I write novels, I improve it a little.
And so authors can write knowingly bad reviews using the methods of black PR, unfair competition. They can successfully have five accounts and log in from different devices, they can even have a floating IP ... But this is not fair and not fair!

Gourmet_DAO I agree it's not fair. That's why i mentioned that multiple accounts from a single IP shouldn't be allowed to review or even exist at all if one of those accounts is an "author".
Normal users won't bother to badmouth your novel if it's good.
And good knowledge of english language matters. It isn't my primary language as well but it's really off-putting how bad most "translators" and "authors" are at it.
Better get back to learning it than writing or translating novels.
xcares The trick is that I am writing a novel so that someone is interested and writes a novel (for me) on the Silk Road and Treasure Hunting. I have a lot of factual material, interestingly, I want to share. It is a pity that many interesting first-born novels are almost all closed and many stones are needed. But the original novels are still open. There is hope that someone will take the idea and write a novel that I can read, chapters 200-300 ... Well, that's a vague hope.
I write ... in spite of my poor English, I have readers 140-150, they are interested. I write for them, for myself, I myself am interested and slowly my English is also getting better.
I will write in any case. But thanks for your feedback.
It would make sense to allow only one review but make it editable
[unknown]
I think they are already editable

I think Webnovel should stop give EXP for writing review because EXP reviews are annoying and distracting. Sometimes I can't find normal reviews among recent reviews at all. Implement something else to encourage people to write. On one site I use, 1 sentence reviews without opinion are forbidden. Review should be at least moderately informative. Users can give review "+" or "-" If review has many "-", moderator will check it and decide if it adhered to the rules, delete it if needed or ask to rewrite it.

Right now review section reminds me of trash bin with occasional diamonds in it.
