A hidden treasure that will appeal to some folks (like me) that I would recommend is The Monk That Wanted To Renounce Asceticism . Very well-written and excellently translated (CKtalon), it's a fantasy novel set in modern day rural China that follows a Buddhist monk as he "levels up". It focuses on people and gives nice insights into daily life in China and into Buddhism as practiced in China. Definitely a gentler and slower novel than many here; just a very nice read (and unlikely to be dropped given translator's philosophy.)
