I just finished my first volume for my story "Mages of the North: The Adventure Begins" and am looking forward to writing Volume 2. For anyone interested, they can find the story here: https://www.webnovel.com/book/mages-of-the-north%3A-the-adventure-begins_17791057805925605

But I saw a thread earlier today about certain series having elements of racism in them, and it kind of made me raise an eyebrow. I got curious about how my world-building would be seen and thought I'd go ahead and ask this question.

In my story, "Mages of the North" multiculturalism doesn't exist. Every continent has its own skin color, which isn't a lot unlike real life. Africa is primarily black, Central and South America is primarily Latinos, Europe, and North America are primarily white, and Asia is primarily Asians, and there's the Middle East which belongs to Arabs but is technically not a continent of its own, or at least not that I'm aware of.

In "Mages of the North", each continent has its own ethnic group, but migration is heavily frowned upon and next to impossible. The Northern Continent is territory that belongs to people with white-colored skin while the Southern continent primarily contains people of Arab colored skin with a few exceptions regarding islands off the coasts. Integration between the North and South was once a thing, but due to how hostile the South's climate and geography is, the North started suffering from an outbreak of deadly diseases brought up from the South. Millions died, forcing entire countries to close their borders and enact harsh military laws that forbid anyone from entering or exiting their countries.

Eventually, the Southerners were forced to leave the Northern Continent, sparking the beginning of what would become a near-endless war.

There are a lot of things I could get into, but I won't for the sake of spoilers. But I think I got the general idea out there.

There's also a similar thing regarding the Eastern and Western Continents on the other side of the globe, but that's something I haven't put a lot of thought into yet. The Eastern Continent belonging to Asians while the Western Continent belongs to blacks.

I know racism is kind of a touchy subject, especially when it comes to politics, but I was curious about this.

When people complain about racism in stories, they are referring to this kind of racism:

    alternatetext

Where the protagonists (author's avatar/self-insert) make broad, sweeping statements condemning an entire country or race (in this case, "Country J" is very clearly referring to Japan - the "fat guy" is Yamada). When the author decides to use his story as a mouthpiece to insult other countries and belittle them. How Japan is evil, inferior to China (culturally or whatever), how Americans are greedy, how the Chinese are "honest" and "honorable" when compared to "despicable" foreigners, that sort of thing.

If you're using racism as a theme in your story rather than using your story as a mouthpiece to spew vile, disgusting insults directed at people from other countries, then you don't have to worry about being seen as a racist.
