  • Why my BL book has mostly female viewers?

RJMidnight Generally, anything 4.0 and over holds promise. If it is the type of novel you like, then you will most likely like it. Below 4.0 are those you will either love or hate. Below 3.5 is generally rubbish, but still appeals to some.

BL novels (Yaoi or Shonen AI) are an exception to this as people who like them, tend to like all of them, while those who don't simply don't read them and in turn leave all the voting to those who are biased toward the genre.

Wolfick so it's like that - no wonder there were (and may be are) so many bl novels with rating 4.8+ whenever I tried to find something. Thanks to Qidian and WW, it's been years since when I tried to find a new novel through NU ranking list.

RJMidnight may be I just was unlucky, but I remember a ton of excited reviews (from the "rotten women", I guess) about great plot and character development. It was the reason to try to read that novel ๐Ÿ˜‚

Iโ€™m so-so on the ratings because I read a few with high ratings that was not for me or I couldnโ€™t see how it was popular.

Other than that, sometimes the rating on NU, I can agree with.

RJMidnight I don't remember the name (it was at least 3-4 years ago), but I'm sure it was about "quick transmigration". The MC was bottom, and it was one of the novels with the highest rating on the whole NU, something around 4.9, AFAIR.
I guess, there is a chance that it's still one of the top BL novels there๐Ÿ˜

My BL book has more male readers than female ones though 'Others' dominates with 50% of total. Is this normal?

DrAxy66 I also write BL novels and for a long time, my audience was mostly male. But now, I have almost double as many female readers than male.

beloved_writer I see, I was expecting more female viewers though but I guess the genre kind of mixed up with male-leading stories

Does it matter if your viewers are male or female? Also, I don's see any huge disparity between your readers. You've got a slightly bigger female audience. That's great. (You have Readers! Congrats!)

By the way, BL novels attract not only female readers. Their appeal depends on their focus. If we are talking about explicit romance novels with a lot of sexual scenes, then, yes, female readers are more likely to pick them up. But if a novel is plot-heavy and does not focus exclusively on the steamy relationship between two gorgeous dudes, it has a broader appeal. I'd say some BL works by Priest fall within this last category. Most people read them because of their mystery element and complex worldbuilding. Plus, there are gorgeous dudes, gorgeous ladies, bitter betrayals and political intrigue.

questions for the females here why do you like bl so much but its meet for guys just a random question from a 70 percent straight male

So many Bl writers are gathered here! Too bad that Webnovel don't have private messages. I would have love to have a read4read. I really need feedback on my latest chapters.

CreatorOfTheVoid I imagine there are various reasons ranging from how male characters are written to escapism to plain eye candy (for manga/shows). I've seen things from just wanting a partial break from misogyny and comparison to a FL to reading about twice the hot guys as justification.

Also, there's always the bit about the yaoi/shounen ai/BL genre's origins in Japan for women since I'm pretty sure it's a shoujo sub-genre, whereas bara appeals more to a gay/bi male demographic. I doubt I could explain that history particularly well, but that's a bit of context.

My personal reason for liking it is that I'm part of the LGBT+ community, so the stories hit closer to home without being too close to home in a sense (lacking some of the heavier social issues while still not having a straight couple as the leads). I like GL as well and write both BL and GL, but BL is quite a bit easier to find due to its popularity and has more high-quality works due to the sheer quantity of stories being put out (compared to literally any other LGBT+ content).

Anyway, I guess this also somewhat answers the main topic of the thread; there are plenty of reasons why women like it a lot, and since Webnovel files it under the FL category, it gets a lot more female readers for that reason, too.

dreamver2 made some good points and I would like to add a couple of my own to her observations. First, I am not an avid BL reader, but there are certain BL novels that I appreciate greatly. Hell, one of my favorite novels, "The Husky and His White Cat", is actually BL. I love it because it is a great piece of literature that also happens to have gay (not only) couples in it.

On a more general note, there are a couple of things many (well-written) BL pieces have that, according to my observations, attract female readers of any sexual orientation.

                        1. The looks. Male leads are usually described as elegant, lithe, well-dressed, and sophisticated. That is pretty much the type of person (male or female) that many modern female readers find physically attractive. You'd rarely come across a bulky hyper-masculine hulk in a BL manga or novel. Smashing hulks can be great. Sure. But many modern ladies prefer the first type. I, too, picked my first BL novel because I love these aesthetics.

                        2. Relationship dynamics. Many well-written BL novels pay equal attention to the leads, highlighting their individuality. This....well...does not always happen in other genres. You will often come across traditional couples performing traditional roles and getting kids in the process... In BL, the two main leads can actually live however they want or perform any role they want. That is something I personally appreciate.

                        3. Novelty. Ok, this may sound strange, but I should point out that BL as a genre is pretty new. When Dumas wrote Monte-Cristo and only hinted at Eugenie Danglar's sexual orientation (she eventually elopes with her female piano teacher to live happily ever after - sorry for the spoiler), many 19th-century readers found it revolting. And now we have BL, GL, Bara. As a female reader, you can have not only a set of characters that you find attractive but choose from a million pieces. Many people simply find it hard to move on and keep on reading BL because they haven't had enough of it.

Readers are readers! You might want to ask your female readers why they picked your book. I don't read that genre but I do know that male readers prefer male characters that have 'male' characteristics. Things like protectiveness, aggression, that sort of thing. If your characters don't really have any of those, you might want to include them or have characters develop them as the story goes along. And character development is always a good thing.

BTW females have male characteristics and males have female ones (nurturing, etc.). The terms are so we can categorize them more easily.
