...and I totally aced it!

That's what I keep telling myself!

In all honesty though, it wasn't THAT hard, just well...it was hard.
Really though, it only took a wee bit of time to finish, oh what, just 5 hours? Yeah, no sweat. I mean that's normal right? No? You gotta understand...it's been a long while since I've taken a test for anything you see, I was so focused and nervous and...

Yeah well wishful thinking aside, I was wondering whether editing for translators here will be like taking Qidian's editor test. Just the thought of dealing with that daily is quite...wonderful. I would probably go insane by day 1.

Wadah hahaha, the grammar was easy to fix. The hard thing to do is fixing the punctuation!

I haven't taken the test but whenever I practice writing, punctuation is always pain, mostly because some of the rules for it are just 'stay consistent'...

Wadah Haha, don't worry, it's nothing like that. In the beginning, there were some people with questionable English skills as translators, but now the quality has improved a lot.

DarkGem That's so great to know! :D.

And yeah the punctuation plays with my mind at times, and I spend so much time on google as a result...which doesn't always give you a straightforward answer either. I came across some em dashes in the test and was super troubled over the spacing rules...do I put a space on one side? Left or right? On either side? Both?

Sometimes I feel so weird about myself freaking out over the little details, but I guess that's what English does to you...

Wadah Most of the new translators are really good. So many people were cut of or failed. Lol

To be honest, when I took the test I couldn't even understand what it was trying to say. The last part where they combined everything. I was just like what even does this mean, I have no idea?? So I gave up.

Wadah its one of those style choice questions. Which publication are you editing for? The em-dash is generally used without spaces (with the except for certain publishers). There's really no right or wrong, but you have to be--like you stated--consistent in its usage. If you spaced it the first time, you can bet that I'll expect it spaced every time after that. Same with serial commas, spaces between ellipses, etc.

            Nou Thanks for the clarification!

By the way, I'm not editing for any publication...at the moment. For now.
It may change though...soon. Maybe. Hopefully. :D

            • Nou replied to this.

Wadah No problem. For the most part, just learn one style in the field of work that you're interested in, and stick with it. For example, if you're going to be doing lots and lots of researching, MLA is the way to go (for classes/subjects like English (not the science field).

              When I asked:

Which publication are you editing for?

it was more of a "what question should you ask yourself?" I forgot to add in the:
It depends on one question: Which publication are you editing for?

As one website puts it: (note, I don't understand the example they used. It was probably autocorrected without them knowing. Idk.)

              em-dashes

Ohh. So MLA style or formatting is the way to go for literature?
Always kinda assumed it was preference-based, to be honest. To think English is my primary language, and I still haven't caught on to these basics :c

Wadah MLA is the preferred formatting for literature because it allows the usage of footnotes. However, it boils down to preference too. My masters thesis is APA style cause I'm more familiar with it.

guys, i also am giving the editor's test, and i have a question
is there a time limit to submit the test??
like, in a day or two something.....
                    awaiting response!

Nou How long did it take for you guys to get your editor test back? I've sent mine and they say they got it like nearly 2 weeks ago and no results back yet :(

h2211games I wanna know too, except mine is the translator's test. I turned it in a couple of days ago, but I'm so impatient, I keep on going back to my email like HAVE I PASSED OR WHAT TELL ME PLEASE. >-<;; makes me anxious since they're like we'll get it back to you ASAP and I'm like tf give me a proper timeframe man! ASAP is too vague! rolls around on the ground anxiously I'm bad at waiting, if you can't see.

I submitted my test on last week's Saturday, super early at dawn, and got a reply on Monday that I'll be notified as soon as it gets assessed. So I waited for a few hours before sending another mail to see if there's been an update, but the reply I got was that the batch of applications I'm part of was still being looked over, and that I'd probably get my result within this week.

So here I am, sucking on my thumbs. :D

hmm... i would be happy if i just got a reply, cause u know, i had to wait for at least 2 months to just get a reply of the recruitment email i sent[ i sent the email on the September and got the reply at the end of October]. i don;t blame the qidian managers, cause i know they r like super busy.... but, u know, i'm just surprised that i got a reply. i had already thought that my mail has gone to spam section.

well, i also have another bad news ... well, for myself. that is, i got my college entrance exams coming, and my parents r arguing with me. the topic is "to cut off internet" or not. and i have like a week till my internet pack expires. and i'm so sad, cause even if i sent my test mail, i wouldn't get the results by the time my internet expires. so guys... i'm in a dilemma... what should i do? do i harass the qidian officials by sending my test mail or should i just let it go, and give it another try after ... well, a yr and a half, when i'm finished with all my studies........ though i don;t know by that time whether qidian will hire any editor or whether the editor's test will be more tough than it already is ]the part of the test being hard is a sarcasm. tehe!!]

JunkieOverThe_Moon First off, you gotta figure out how to save your internet. Nothing is more important than the internet! Nothing! No access to the internet is like denying you of all the goodness left in this world!

Anyways, college entrance or editing. I'd say it's all up to you really. As long as you're capable and willing, who's to stop you from editing part-time while studying?

JunkieOverThe_Moon If you don't save your Internet, what difference does it make if QI accepts you or not? Since if you want to work for it, you have to have Internet...

DarkGem my real question was to : whether or not should i actually send the test mail over to the officials. and of course, i know that it makes no difference if i don;t have internet!
the thing is.... i and my parents had a agreement, by which they will take internet in mobile phone instead of computer. and for your kind knowledge, i prefer a down-to-earth desktop than my mom's mobile to do internet. that's it!

JunkieOverThe_Moon Well, it depends on what you want to do then. If you want to focus solely on your studies, than just do nothing. But if you prefer to have a part-time job and earn some money on your free time, then go ahead and send it.

If you didn't find the test that hard, then it all depends on how tough you think your studies will be, how much free time you'll have, and if you'll want to spend it working. Because as fun as reading stories and working on them is, it's still work.

JunkieOverThe_Moon My parents have been telling my older brother to get a part-time job at uni since he was 18. Wouldn't your parents be appreciative of the fact that you've got a part-time job? The fact that you can bring in another source of income to last another day in this cruel, dog-eat-dog world would surely make them, right? And editing will give you a better eye for detail when going over documents and whatnot in the future! Editing will improve how you write up documents, improving sentence structure and word choice! Surely, your parents have got to appreciate that you're not only making your own money, you're expanding and improving your current skill set, paving a steady road for your future, right?

                                      DarkGem
thnks guys! i appreciate your thoughts, but... the thing is, my parents still live on the stone-age period. they think a hundred times about whether or not they should visit a e-shopping site, let alone buying something. and as for money matters, even if we become poor, they would still say that we have enough money, so study. i already had two huge world wars in my house when i just brought the topic of editing webnovels out. they just don't believe me. [ the actual reason why my parents are cutting off internet is because my dad was fired from his job at the age of 56, and the fees of colleges are increasing here in India. ]
Neverfire7 and as for Neverfire7 opinion, i already told my parents about the benefits of reading story books ages ago, but they still bicker around with me yelling "why r u reading story books!!! are u a child ... blah-blah-blah"
editing, from my view point is a far off thing.
my plan was to secretly test the waters of editing in the last 6 months we had planned to take before i go to closed door cultivation, but since he was fired, the period is shortened further, coming from 6 to 0.
anyway, sorry for making this too long. i appreciate all of your concerns. and yes, if i can securely pass the editing xam this time, i'm gonna fight for it again with my parents. otherwise, i will just wait till i go to college.
                                      thnk u

guys, i am taking the editor's test. and there is always this caption before the a new test section saying, "IMPRESS US IF U CAN" wtf. how the hell do i impress someone, who has just sent me one mail and that too, a test mail!! and ... who is Danqing Sun??

JunkieOverThe_Moon Ignore the "Impress us if u can", it's just a cutesy thing. Danqing Sun, I'm assuming is the name/nickname for one of the bosses.

JunkieOverThe_Moon That's Sunny, one of the Qidian editors. (Not to be confused with novel proofreaders/editors)

To me, "Impress us if you can" was a challenge. All night I was yelling to myself, aw yeah this boi gonna impress somebody! Only lasted for a night though and I was whimpering from the pain at the end.

                                                h2211games

It took about 10 days before they responded back to me. This was back in January, so things might be a bit more different now.

JunkieOverThe_Moon : There's no internet at your college? What college is this? Plus, there's internet at your public library, assuming you're in the US. Idk how it is elsewhere though.

Nou dude, i will be taking the COLLEGE ENTRANCE XAM! i'm not in a college right now. and yeah, i'm not from america. and there's wifi and all in library and public places, but i like my good-old desktop for writing purpose. i am not so good with mobiles and android.
and, will our results be mailed back, even if we failed the test?? [cause i wanna know how bad i actually am as per international standards]

                                                  • Nou replied to this.

Nou hmmmmmmmm.... hmmmmmmmmmm......... thnks man! well, now i know wht to expect. and... it also shows how extraordinary u r in english. and....... why do i feel so jealous looking at it........ well, i was jealous of first rank holders since the beginning of my life.

JunkieOverThe_Moon like over a week and a half? I think they do it in batches tho so everyone should get the result if they are in the same batch. Just my opinion tho, not 100% sure.

Ugh, I'm dying during the waiting for Qidian's email reply... I received an email stating that they're formally accepting me on a FRIDAY 6 PM <<<< RAGE It's like, the food is gonna enter your mouth but they're preventing you from eating it... Prolly before they even discuss stuff with me I'll probably be starved A-F.. cries

Can I know how long does it usually take for them to reply? It's kinda affecting my concentration, but it's not really nice to spam them with emails .... x.x
