I want to make a novel with wuxia/xanxia as my genre but the thing is I don't know how to make a cultivation stage/realm. I already search many places and look at the different novels as my reference but I still confused what the important thing that I need in each stage or realm.....so can anyone teach me how to make one...thank you.... sorry for my bad english

    Xianxia;
    Well for scale in infinite distance works (infinite realms xianxia) you start from normal buildings, then one realm higher you make them 1000x bigger, and then another realm higher you make the continent 7000 trillion light-years in diameter. Also, you don't explain how stuff works in xianxia, you just say what it does. Do keep in mind that you need to make the characters stupid, while higher cultivation levels should make a person smarter, it doesn't in martial arts novels, it just makes them think faster and react faster to threats -> now this might make you think that it's correct to not use the word 'breath' to calculate time in a fight between people who think 1000000x faster than normal humans, but you would be wrong, always use the word 'breath' for fights, it's like those American novels that use feet (instead of metres), stupid but it's just the norm. An important thing to take note of is that xianxia is a Chinese gendre, so you need to stay true to the Chinese culture if you want to make a 'true' xianxia, Chinese culture has some thing with nation toppling beauties, so you need to include those, oh! Don't forget fairies, hot blooded teenagers, and high doses of racism (anti-demon, etc...). You should also not forget that the Chinese (not all Chinese but I have no clue how to phrase that) do not understand international morals, so don't add stuff like "it's bad to kill people" into a xianxia novel.

    Cultivation;
    As for how to make a cultivation system... you just make it, it isn't supposed to make sense, that's what I find amazing about cultivation novels, they slowly make you think less and just accept stuff. From what I've seen cultivation is usually depicted as building a building, the stronger base you make the higher cultivation realm you can reach, but not everyone has the resources to do so.

    Now the most important part about Xianxia is to not question why the world works like that, because the motto of the xianxia genre is 'everybody loses', so you need to make the characters in the novel narrowminded and blame someone else for their problems - for example the 'heavens'.

      bear8 When cultivators, who can think 1000000x faster than normal humans, fight against each other, there is always half a breath of time, when normal people can argue with each other on who will kill who and who's granddaddy will come out after that to kill the winner and so on. The other half of breath is dedicated to sound effects and special effects explanation of the skills. So a breath of time is quite a long time but not really. It is an immediate moment of time and several minutes of burning incense stick at the same time.

      bear8 "One Breath of time (一个呼吸的时间 yī gè hūxī de shíjiān) Meaning: a poetic way of referring to a very short time span (how long it takes a person to inhale and exhale once)… usually about 1-3 seconds." - Daddy Google

        Happy_AltRight hey...I'm sorry for asking too much but can you explained about make the character dumb do I need to make all the characters dumb or just a few?? another thing is the 'international morals' are you saying that everyone can kill people as their please??... the last question is about 'everybody loses' do all my characters will blame heaven for everything or just for some trivial matters? again sorry for my broken english😅😅😅😅😅

          bear8
          • Everyone who cultivates a lot needs to be dumb/narrowminded, because in cultivation being smart usually leads to qi deviation/heart demons/etc..., cultivation is usually depicted as being very painful so no normal person would do such (without a goal like revenge or something).
          • Yes, everyone can kill people as they please, there are only a few exceptions, one of them is when it would lose them face (For example, at a meeting between sects an elder of Sect A says that his sect is very nice to mortals and doesn't massacre them for fun. Now sect elder of Sect B would send out a mortal who would testify that Sect A killed his family for no reason. - While it may be true that Sect A does kill mortals for fun, they can't kill him right now in front of other sects otherwise they would lose face, so they would send someone from their sect after the sect meeting ends to assassinate him, most likely even torture him to death - 'Kill the chicken to scare the monkey'). Now while everyone can kill as they please, that doesn't mean that they will, 'face' and benefits are very important in cultivation novels, and killing mortals usually doesn't give them any benefits (thought some people get pleasure from killing or... pillaging ;). Though some cultivation novels feature demonic cultivation, which does get benefits from killing mortals [normal people]).
          • Not every character needs to blame the heavens for everything :D, but it goes back to 'face', in the Chinese culture (which xianxia is from), it's normal to hide your problems and blame other people for it, because it would make you look bad.
