First, to actually earn your novel needs to be contracted. Contracts typically happen once the novel is over 50K words or if it is in a WPC / WSA and one of the content editors sees it and makes the offer.
Once contracted, there are two ways of earning income (technically 3, but I'll explain later.)
First is the gifting system. People can gift works different gifts at fixed coin amounts, with the author earning the amount of money earned from the purchase of those coins based on what was agreed in the contract.
Second is paid chapter unlocks. Once contracted, an author can choose which chapter to go premium at. After that point, every chapter uploaded in the story, as well as chapters already uploaded past the chapter you chose to go premium at, require the reader to pay the required coin amount to access (or use fast passes, which earn the author no income).
It is here that the third way comes in. Once premium, authors can activate privilege which gives readers the opportunity to read a few chapters ahead of non priv readers. The author can choose the desired coin prices as well as the amount of chapters priv readers can have access to.
