In cultivation novels, it's often seen that when a young master from a clan or sect goes on a dangerous quest or enters a fight where death is a possibility, and they end up dying, the leaders of the family or sect are surprisingly shocked and upset. They ask, "Oh no, how could this happen? Who would let him die in a fight?" This doesn't make much sense because in a death match, it's obvious that one person will die - it's either the young master or his opponent. It's weird to expect the opponent to just give up.
This part of the story can be annoying. If the leaders really want to keep their young members safe, they shouldn't send them into deadly situations where they can't help them. And if they're okay with sending them to become stronger, they shouldn't be so upset if they die since that's a known risk. It's odd when they're surprised that a weaker member of their group dies, especially when their whole idea is that only the strongest should succeed. It just doesn't add up.
