yansusustories how could comments be a spoiler? If you read the comments first before you read the chapter then you have nobody else to blame but yourself.
Please remove top comments from being shown at end of chapter
Eliza_Thornberry Which operating system do you have on your phone, and can you give instructions on how to change which comments appear at the end of the chapter? I have Android 7 and changing the sorting method in the full comments page does not affect the 3 comments that automatically appear at the end of the chapter in my app.
As far as I saw, no one in this thread has mentioned reading comments before reading the chapter. Comments can be spoilers by revealing details of future plot, especially plot twists, cliffhangers, and conclusions of ongoing story threads. I gave an example in the first post, such as revealing the future death of a character and even which future chapter the death will occur.
Eliza_Thornberry I'm not doing that. But there are 2 possibilities here:
1. You are only catching up to a novel and some people rereading have posted spoilers in the comment section already.
2. You are up to date with a novel but other readers have already read the raws or seen spoilers somewhere else.
It's actually not that rare of a thing.
I would add to the definition of a spoiler, that the future detail has to have a degree of specificity. How specific depends on who you ask. Saying something like "the next chapter is going to be about slice of life" is probably not specific enough to be a spoiler. Saying the protagonist will lose the ongoing battle 5 chapters from now is pretty specific.
Also, spoilers are from people who know what will happen, usually because they read ahead in the raws, or because someone else told them. An honest theory about future plot can sometimes be misunderstood as a spoiler if the theory turns out to be accurate. And sometimes readers may disguise a spoiler as a theory, but it would be difficult to prove that.
yansusustories why would anyone like those comments? Those should be reported. XD The novels I read top comments were all about waifus and husbandos. Max cringe all the time.
captain_krunch a spoiler doesn't have to be accurate, since even a wrong spoiler would do the trick since you'll know those won't have any chance of happening anymore. If the comment section of your novels is toxic, better just skip through them. It won't change whether it's sorted different.
Eliza_Thornberry If the spoiler is in the top 3 comments at the end of a chapter, you may scroll too far when reading the last paragraph of the chapter and accidentally read it. Even if you avoided that, you still have to scroll past them to get to the next chapter or to see the voting button. If the comment is a long one, it's easy not to read it when scrolling. But if it's short like "I saw the raws, [name] dies in 5 chapters," then the chance of accidentally reading it is higher.
Eliza_Thornberry Hmm.. That was what I did before actually. I skip the comments on these novels with spoilers. The problem right now is, in the app, the top three liked comments were shown after every chapter so you can't skip it. :( And yes, others actually liked those spoiler comments so they were on the top.
So, like what captain_krunch suggested in the first post here, there should be a way to report that these comments were spoilers and maybe, hide the spoiler comments like what they can do in the reviews. :)
DazzlingGem 0is there a new update? I'm still using the version a few months back so the comments were automatically hidden.
captain_krunch everyone has a part on that, since a lot of people liked it. Also there's no such thing as an MC dying on Chinese LNs, so that's definitely a troll. XD

Eliza_Thornberry I don't know about the latest update now, but what I have was earlier of this month's update, I think. So yeah, maybe you can't see it since you haven't updated yours yet. :( I wish I didn't update mine.
PS: But the best solution is still the ability to report these spoiler comments.
Yes, those comments shouldn't be liked. But they are. And, well, some readers like reading spoilers and even actively ask for them so it's not that surprising that they make the top comments
maybe you should read the chapter before looking at comments, but hey, that's just my opinion

sinx Hey, have you read all the posts in this thread? We don't read the comments before reading the chapter. The spoilers were from raws or latest chapters from those rereading which is a spoiler for those just catching up. :)
Oh, and latest app update shows the top 3 comments even without checking so you can't skip reading it too.

sinx You should carefully read the original post and some of the replies before replying to a thread. What you said is a misinterpretation of the original post that has already been mentioned and discussed in the thread.
i did read, i understood wrong then, hmm...in that case it is a valid point, i rarely go to the comment section, but if this is what is happening it's no good, you shouldn't spoil people
The tops comments at the end of the chapter feels like a bad attempt to follow Line Webtoon's style.
Just switch back to old style, it was perfect. Clear, clean letters and dark black background without any comments after chapters made reading here a great experience. Now suddenly we get grey washed out background with dim letters and random comments no one wants to see while binge reading.
Why fix what's not broken, at least give an option to switch back instead of forcing everyone into this abomination.
@WEBNOVEL_OFFICIAL if you've not seen the first thread posted about this please see this one. would greatly appreciate this feature removed or made optional. the new comments section at the bottom of the chapters is problematic. its distracting and unpleasant for readers, as well as unnecessarily messy.
Or just add an option to auto hide top comments. It's seriously annoying when your binge reading and your immersion gets completely interrupted because your eyes started to read the comments automatically.
