  • New to webnovel, still confused on a few things

I migrated here from Wattpad since it seems like I'll find more of my target audience here. It's pretty cool so far (although I just joined literally an hour ago so uh my opinion will probably change dramatically in the next few days), but the whole gamification of writing a novel still leaves me a bit confused.

I'm mostly confused about the power stones. Do I just vote for my own novel everyday until the algorithm gets me more readers? Like, I want to advertise it here, but it seems a bit needy. Engaging with the systems is probably the way to go, but I mostly want to focus on writing.

Also, how often do writers here post their work? I'm used to posting one chapter a week, but it seems like most people here are pretty prolific.

    I've been here for 2 weeks now. Power stones show popularity. Readers receive a certain amount each day to vote.
    To get popular:
    1. Enter a writing contest if you're just starting out. Readers check them out so it provides a big initial boost. I did this for both my novels and they currently sit in the 200-300 range in the original rankings. If you score 1st in a contest your novel will also get featured on the front page.
    2. Post daily updates and you'll eventually appear on the front page in the daily updates section. Not everyone can do this and that's fine. Just know you may suffer a lack of popularity from it. You also won't get featured in the daily updates section, which in my opinion is the easiest to get into. I've had one of my novels appear twice in it within 2 weeks!
    3. Go ahead and advertise your novel here, but don't spam. You'll see shameless novels promote constantly. Check out the forum threads for helpful things to you. There's a thread where authors read each others novels and swap reviews. More reviews likely means more readers!

    I don't really know what else you can do than the above. If your novel is super good it might just climb the rankings naturally? I haven't been here long enough to know the climbing situation for most books. Nor do I know what the exceptions to the rules I've stated above are.

        How often do the writing contests change? The current ones don't really fit my current novel, although I guess I could just write a short story.

            They do new ones every week. Only new novels are eligible. Maybe just keep an eye open for one you like. You could also force yourself out of your comfort zone. I was very uncomfortable entering the Steampunk competition last week because I have no mechanical knowledge. I legit can't even change my own oil. I ended up winning 1st which surprised me. The novel has also turned out much better than I expected. Granted, I love the Steampunk theme. I just never thought I'd write one.

                If you can't... Then you won't be popular.

                So what is your goal? Increasing your old novel reader base? Looking for contract? Search for Book of Author in this site. It is a good read.

                1. Readers in here loves simple happy novel with a bit detailing lately. Around 60% of readers here male. While 40% is female. If you haven't read a Webnovel, try to read TKA, Rank 3 translation, a bit. That is the perfect example. It had good detailing while being simple. Basic standards Webnovel is Coiling Dragon. You can try to read it too. It is free and complete. It also a balance between eastern and western fantasy.

                2. Wattpad loves vampire and werewolf romance. Readers in here used to love System novel, a branch of LitRPG. However it seems more towards Erotica now. While female readers love Billionaire KDrama genre. Change the billionaire with Imperial King or Prince for traditional story. So Sex and System in title sells. Naruto FanFic also sells. Title and Cover is important. Lately the contest become more interesting making system outdate. So as Sloth had said, check the contest. New theme will be informed every Fridays in TGIF.

                3. Unlike Wattpad, readers in here accept ongoing novel easier. However it must be daily. Remember chapter in webnovel is around 1.000~1.500 words. So it isn't that hard. Writing daily would give you chance to be featured on the front pages. Which will add nore readers. Daily is Webnovel key. The goal is bite sized novel read during lunch break, etc.

                4. Wattpad based its ranking in number of library added. In here we uses Collection term. Both used % so new novel had advantages. However in here that is used for Front Page feature. Similar to Wattpad Hotlist and New combined into Webnovel's Trending. Only 8 novels get featured for 3 day.

                5. The key for novel is write daily, you will get few readers and then front page. You will jump. If you reach 50 chapters and unpopular. Most likely it will be unpopular. Time to write something new.

                6. If you can't write daily, then stockpile some chapters first 20~30~50. Then release daily. 20~30 days in a row will give you chance to appear on the front page once.

                7. There are novels which no longer daily updated but receives some power stones voting. They are beautifully written. Daily reminded people to vote.

                8. Like sweets said. Ranking is Weekly Popularity Constest. So if you don't daily you just crippled your own legs.

                9. Webnovel is not a simple platform like Wattpad, Tapas, or RR. It is a publisher. So to earn money here, you will need to contract with them. Behind them is Chinese entertainment giant, Tencent (most Wattpaders dream of getting a contract with TV company or book publisher), this giant is the world number 1 game maker, china traditional publisher too, and just branches into animation, and tv. They want to be Chinese Disney. That is Webnovel selling point. However do not hope for that for now, you have to beat ten thousand novels in China too. They have authors writing professionally for 10+ years. Their novels are already in Chinese.

                Took a bit of time to check your profile in Wattpad if you use similar pen name. Your writing style is better than most. However your chapter number is a bit on low side.

                      And just a friendly reminder, the review rating system in webnovel maybe harsh. I don't know how they give rating in wattpad.
                      A reader could easily give one star review just because he don't like the story, no matter how good you build the story and the character inside.
                      Just don't get discouraged because of that 😉

                        SweetsTomato I don't think rating is important in Wattpad. Comments is harder to see there.

                        View and Collection is more important on Wattpad.

                        You have to be recommended by popular authors put into their reading list. Wattpad is like social network for authors and novels reader.

                        They have a good recommendation system tho. Actually Webnovel has this data but novel here is still too low.

                          MasterRabbink This is very helpful, thank you! I have to say, Webnovel's approach to getting people to make content is very... novel. Almost like a competitive game. I'm not a fast writer (as you might have guessed from my Wattpad profile, although I wrote those years ago) so I think doing dailies is gonna be tough. It's going to take me a while to stock up on chapters as well.

                          Well, I'm not really looking to be popular. I just want to get people reading my work. I already somehow got more views here in a day than actual years on Wattpad, which is nice.
