Today I apparently got 20 SS, but I didn't receive them.

You received 20 xp, they changed the rewards because xp is better than SS. At least to them. In their own words check in now gives "bigger rewards than just SS". So you get 20 xp, or 2 power stones or 2 energy stones instead of SS.
Well i can't check in at all because apparently excepting the gift which gave me 8 stones is my checkin now.
