The Spirit Stones are more or less the only way for Webnovel.com to make money off of their service. WHile they still have the ad banners beneath every chapter (when you're reading on a computer, don't know how it's for mobile and app users), the revenue from just this advertisement isn't enough to pay for their expenses and their employee's salaries.
Still, I do think that it's really annoying, some times. I only have one story in my library that I need to pay Spirit Stones to read, but there's days where I can't even read two of the chapters because of the random amount of Spirit Stones you get from the Daily Check-In. If that amount was at least fixed, that'd be great.
