  • Don't Restrict Device Brightness Control within the App's Reader

EDIT (2019/05/21):- In hindsight I probably should have created a new thread for my post further down Anotest - the title isn't quite accurate now, although the bulk of the problem remains unchanged even after the latest app update tries to fix this ("Use system brightness" checkbox in Reader). Too late now, so please see my next post down for why this new feature STILL hasn't solved the low brightness issue (for me at least)!

When using the app's reader I find that my device's brightness setting is overridden, leaving the screen far too bright for my typical usage at night.

In all other areas of the app I can see that the device's global brightness setting is adhered to and can be adjusted (quick-settings drop down), but once I go into the reader, this control is lost in favour of the app taking over. Even after setting the reader's brightness slider all the way to the minimum, the screen is still substantially brighter than the minimum brightness the device is capable of, and in turn means the screen is brighter than what I find comfortable for all reading I do on it!

This brightness override can be observed when entering the reader from the library screen: the library screen brightens up preemptively with the reader's brightness setting taking over from the global device setting, just as the animation to bring the reader in to the foreground is kicked off. The screen brightness returns to 'normal' (goes dimmer as per device brightness setting) when exiting the reader back to the library.

Now, I appreciate the decision to provide easy control over system brightness within the reader's UI itself, but if you're going to take full control over the system brightness please at least support the full brightness range of that device! Ideally, you wouldn't restrict the device control at all; whether it's an architectural decision for the app team, or a UI design decision for aesthetics, neither option seems to justify a feature restriction that (objectively?) holds no benefit to the users?!

Please take this into consideration. Thanks.

tl;dr: Support the full brightness range of the device within the app reader, or don't restrict this control within the reader in the first place. Either option would work, and can only increase usability in the end.

I see you have/had the same problem I am having right now.
This problem has shown on my phone after the new update. Were you able to fix your problem ?. If so please tell me how. I hadn't had this porblem before the new update.
Thank you

I'm liking the new update that provides a checkbox to "Use system brightness", as that's the feature update I was hoping for; however, that hasn't solved the low brightness problem! 😩

Even when selecting the checkbox the global system brightness setting is 'ignored' for very low brightness settings (ie. typical nighttime use), where it seemingly halts at changes below ~8% of global brightness. A related issue seems present when using the app's in-built brightness slider, where moving the slider below the ~8% brightness setting also shows zero effect on the reader brightness. To clarify:

    ~8 to 100% – Brightness adjusts correctly.
0% to ~8% – No change at all. Brightness stays at ~8% level no matter what.

This applies whether using the system brightness or the in-built brightness setting, and ONLY affects the reader – all other sections of the app correctly output with the expected brightness even when using a low brightness value (ie. <8%).

As similarly mentioned in the original post, this can be seen on my device where, by going in and out of the Reader from the Library, the brightness can be seen to vary if using low (<8%) system brightness settings with the checkbox is selected. To reiterate, when above ~8% for system brightness both sections marry up and show consistency when moving between the two, but when below that ~8% system value, the brightness will go up and down when moving in and out of the Reader.

tl;dr:- Although the addition of the "Use system brightness" feature is a great 👌 addition, the app in-built brightness functionality STILL doesn't work correctly at very low (<~%8) brightness levels. That applies to any source for brightness control: global system or app's in-built reader.

My device system brightness goes lower than the apps. My eyes burn at night because of how bright the app is. We need an update asal

NotReaper exactly, when its night i literally cant read at all. I never had any issues with the brightness since i could just change my phones brightness, but now the app doesnt allow me to change it
