Alright, fellow readers, writers, and helpers. I need help in deciding which synopsis for a new novel I plan to write is the better choice. For the problems, the difference between the two examples I will put is one being too long for my taste and the other one lacking enough info to entice the potential readers. In any case, I'll let you'll decide!

Synopsis #1 (Shorter and I like more)

The ultimate wish fulfillment is here!

Swen Croydon is a lazy young sixteen-year-old Emperor. With his parents dead and his lands small but rich in resources, the surrounding kingdoms underneath him decide to lay claim to his wealth.

Now stuck in sham marriages with five rebellious kings' daughters, his trusted adviser makes him see a seer to determine the fate of the empire.

But who knew this lazy genius of all geniuses was a firm believer that only oneself can control one's fate.

"Your empire shall crumble, and you Emperor Swen, you shall remain a failure that the entire world knows from past, present, and future!"

"Hm... This is so tiresome. Question, Imperial Adviser. Why does the world seem to fit in the palm of my hand suddenly?"

Yes, a sleeping beast has awakened!

Synopsis #2 (more info but I don't get as excited reading it)

The ultimate wish fulfillment is here!

Swen Croydon is a lazy young sixteen-year-old Emperor living in a fantasy world that is ruled by the Emperor Ranking System. With his parents dead and his lands small but rich in resources, the surrounding kingdoms underneath him hatch a vicious plot.

Using an old tradition from his empire to seize his assets, five rebellious kings decide to exchange their daughters for bridal tokens.

Now stuck in sham marriages with five rebellious kings' daughters who despise him for being the Emperor Failure, his trusted adviser makes him see a seer to determine the fate of the empire.

But who knew this lazy genius of all geniuses was a firm believer that only oneself can control one's fate.

"Your empire shall crumble, and you Emperor Swen, you shall remain a failure that the entire world knows! Be it past, present, or future, all will agree!"

"Hm... This is so tiresome. Question, Imperial Adviser. Why does the world seem to fit in the palm of my hand suddenly?"

Yes, a sleeping beast has awakened!

So... which is better? Or do both seem the same?

I don't really see any issue with either, but for WebNovel and the viewer-base that exists here, I'd probably recommend #1 for you, since it's shorter, to the point, and pulls more attention.

Also, without considering which synopsis to pick... what makes your main character a 'Genius of all geniuses?" If he's so brilliant, why is he only now acting and engaging in the power struggle? If he's so great and smart, why come someone seems to refer to his rule as a "failure that the entire world knows from past, present, and future!"?

Consistency and smart writing, that's what you need to remember.

JVenior Okay, thanks for the input. But you might have skimmed through some.

      For instance -

JVenior what makes your main character a 'Genius of all geniuses?"

Answer - The story will tell that. But, this is a hint!

Reading0Books Swen Croydon is a lazy young sixteen-year-old Emperor.

      #2 -

JVenior If he's so brilliant, why is he only now acting and engaging in the power struggle?

Answer - Laziness is the root of the problem. There is no drive to succeed!

Reading0Books his trusted adviser makes him see a seer to determine the fate of the empire.

But who knew this lazy genius of all geniuses was a firm believer that only oneself can control one's fate.

      #3 -

JVenior If he's so great and smart, why come someone seems to refer to his rule as a "failure that the entire world knows from past, present, and future!"?

Answer - As number 2 says, he is told his fate or future by a seer/prophet. But in return, he is a firm believer that only he can decide his fate/future. So, before his fate got decided, he would have idled around.

No no, my question wasn't for exposition to explain why and how the main character is somehow a 'genius of all genuises', my question is what sort of substance can you, the author, include to make me actually genuinely believe it.

Anyone can write a smart main character just by saying "he's smart and brilliant, smarter than everyone else, believe me..." but without actual substance and reasoning, I won't believe it.

You can have a smart main character, but does it actually count as being intellectual if there is no actual clever plotting and writing to assist in creating said character?

So let me ask you this; if he's a firm believer that he's the only one in control of his own fate, why would he even seek out or entertain the notion of a seer/prophet? What plot device is used to make this happen, and how is it handled?

Snarky bravado? Sternly uninterested? Maybe even cautiously optimistic?

Also, why is the main character lazy? What made him lazy, and how does his kingdom still exist if he's wildly lazy? Also, does he even deserve to keep his throne if he's uninterested in actually managing it and acting as a leader would? What changes this, what makes him not lazy? The seer? Why?

Also, why does he needlessly trust his advisor, and not second guess anything? Why would a 'genius of all geniuses' blindly let someone else practically rule in his stead? What if that person is plotting against him, and is the reason his kingdom is in such a rough patch? If so, is he really that smart if he blindly trusted in an enemy? etc etc

You can give me heaps of written exposition, and have your narrator explain to me just how smart your main character is, but until I can SEE it for myself, I won't believe it.

        Show, don't tell.
        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Show,_don%27t_tell

Again, your answer to me asking you how your main character is actually a genius was that your story would "tell" me, instead of "show" me. Show me the math, show me the thought process, show me the plotting and the intent. Until I can see for myself, I'll take the narrator's "telling" with a grain of salt.

(This is the biggest issue with writing a story about a 'genius of all geniuses', you'll have people like me pointing stuff like this out.)

Reading0Books First one, the explanation on the 5 brides is not necessary and can be revealed in the actual story. Additionally, the first makes you wonder why 5 brides all of a sudden, and what plans the enemies hatching. The second just spoils it.

JVenior No problem. In fact, I understood what you meant after I posted the first reply lol. Also had similar thoughts of just claiming the character as 'smart' which is why I left it to my future readers by not adding a smart or intelligent tag. Instead, the genius meaning was intended for talent wise. Of course, I also want it to be smart, but it's my way out to say 'there are no claims to this, look at the tags.'

Chryiss Thanks, your view on it is also like mine's, but I felt the need to add it after reading through the forum and seeing a few posts saying the best route to a good synopsis is having details, so the readers know what they are getting into. In the end, it didn't set well, so I asked for help.
