I'm the same to with time. I'll add with my experience for storylining.
Outlining a storyline from start to end and research the aspect you want to put in can help with the writing, especially for character driven stories. You need an outline.
A method for simple outlining. Dot point from start to end the story chapters at a high level then ask questions on those points and formulate answers. The answers is what you write to.
Then look over outline for consistency among the chapters (they should answer to questions asked at the story summary) and check for progression and reading flow. Use chapter goals if you have to for fast pace chapters that build up to a climax.
Example:
Story summary of story I want to write.
What is the ultimate goal of story?
What is the challenge to stop that goal?
What removes the challenge to reach the goal?
What is sacrificed?
What is gained?
Ch1- Open story with MC being chased by zombies.
Why zombies?
Why chasing MC?
Where?
What's the ultimate goal MC must achieve in this chapter?
Or what is the goal of this chapter?
Chp2- MC happens upon survivers in a shop.
Who's there?
Why there?
Are any key characters?
What is the goal of this chapter?
Hope that helps.
