  • Why Japanese Light Novels Are Trash

Now don’t get me wrong.

I am as obsessed with Japanese Light Novels as the next person that can utter out several Japanese Light Novel Titles off the top of their head. However, there are more than a few things I’ve noticed since reading a varied of JP Light Novels.
It has honestly frustrated me. I wondered sometimes if the translator translated in that way or it was that way in its original form. So, I have been trying to learn Japanese to read them in their original form when I become fluent. But at this moment here are some of the things that made me drop too many of these JP Light Novels.

  1. I was recently swept up with REINCARNATION based novels and what I have seen so far is the repeated use of a “kinda-but-not-really weak” OP MC. Every one of them are not executed well. I cringe at the way every mc seems to stack up powerful skills but never had any use for them for the rest of the story until maybe later at the end of the book but by then I’ll be gone. Some can be glimpsed when convenient and it is usually when they try to save or show off to the people or their womens (really womens! That's how much women gravitates to mc like flies to poop) 👈🏼 This is another thing that gets me too.

  2. Reiterated phrases such as “of course” or “ne ne ne ne” or “tommo”

  3. Having a mc that never had a woman’s attention suddenly become popular with the majority of the women population.

  4. Everything seems bland. Too many repeated words and description and thoughts. The action is not satisfactory.

  5. The same character makeup as every other novels. They either play hero and take advantage of it or play hero and become a pity party for himself.

  6. The same heroine. Too headstrong or too dumb and kind and FORGIVING FOR NO REASON!!!

  7. Half assed or too simple world. I can’t explain enough. It disappoints me.

  8. Using the same old joke.

  9. There must be a moment of revealing yourself without thought or without thinking of consequences and somehow everyone is happy and cool with your BIG REVEAL.

  10. Secondary characters are too passive or too dumb or seen as unnecessary.

  11. Switching of point of view that reiterates what happened in previous chapters.

  12. The “forceful” Mother or female with the phrase “if it’s you you can do it”

  13. Asking after getting the answer. I don’t understand it. Maybe it is the structure of their language. I have to see when I get to that part of sentence structures. Right now I am still trying to memorize hiraganas.

And many more.....

Do you also have an opinion on why Japanese Light Novels are trash?

Let me know. You can go ahead and embarrass or amaze me with information of why I may be wrong or may be right.

Stuff I hate: the phrase "so called", Slice of life with a bland world( so bland it makes you want a slice of death), and the entirety of harem. People who like harem should do research on what harem in america is like. It exists. This one dude has five wives, 20 something kids, and can't remember all of their names. His grocery bill is huge, not to mention running five households means he can never really connect to his kids.

I've tried to get myself into JP novels and it's not really possible since i can't get used to novels written in "First Person PoV".

I kind of agree that reincarnation and isekai LNs really have become cliched or dare I say stereotypical. I admit that I don't see the whole picture since I usually watch shows that have been adapted to them instead of reading them. I honestly got bored with that genre over the years.
Nevertheless, I still seek for LNs that are pretty substantial and really have the literary characteristic to it without trying to touch the fantasy genre but the more realistic ones.
