Veronica8 glares Gimme half your energy, Evil Overlord.
What happened today?
I was just scrolling through the PS ranking(original) and I was surprised seeing those covers!
Most of the covers have images which the author's maybe never owned! Even though most of them have added the cover doesn't belongs to me/credits to the owner statements but still those images clearly have legal copyright license! If by chance, the artist or the correspondent company is informed about it, I am curious who will bear the consequences, The webnovel or The author bc most of the works are contracted.
PS: Sorry chris, I was too lazy to create a new thread so just ranted here
Well, I draw on the vector graphics myself, they are not so beautiful, not so attractive, but mine :)

Mochimoshu It depends on who owns the copyright of the book.
It's either WN or the Author. If it's contracted, it's WN who has to carry the consequence.
That's why it pays to always hold a license for the image for commercial use, and what conditions of those licenses to meet.
Fortunately, being online, it's just as easy to replace the image if that should ever happen. It's harder when the image is set to a hard copy book.
Veronica8 Hmm, I was talking about the contratcted ones actually!
One of my friend had to go through this Infringement process! She just used a photo of an unknown artist(he is was popular tho with his works) in her blog and had also followed the copyright policies Under this guidelines but still had to pay huge sum bc the artist defended that he never mentioned anywhere that his work can be used by some random strangers! It seemed like he was waiting for more ppl to use his works n later when his works went popular, he almost created a huge headlines in my town!
So when I caught up with her yday, this WN covers just got into my head!
Mochimoshu No worries, that’s exactly what this thread is for!
Interesting story though. Even though it’s his artwork, that’s seems devious to take advantage of a WN author’s popularity and success, but that’s another layer of risk I suppose when using copyrighted material. You don’t know if the author is waiting to jump on you for using their art for when you’re more successful. Or perhaps, they only realized it was being used when the writing got more popular. Either way, it’s interesting how both sides were ‘unethical’ in their own way, but you can’t exactly blame the artists for using timing to his advantage since it’s his work; even though, it does feel sorta wrong.
I ate pilaf! He was amazing! Wrote to the bottom of the chapter! in 1100 words. Now I'm trying to write another chapter.

Chryiss Then can we use the arts on internet or not
What if we use it and remove it when we are about sign a contract. I mean we didn't use his work to earn money right

ReincarnatedSaint Good question. Some art, whether or not it’s used for commercial purpose, still cannot be used. It all depends on what the artist set the copyright as. You can search for images on Google, for instance, and set the usage settings to reuse with modification, non-commercial, commercial, etc. Some artists will say directly from the source whether or not it’s copyrighted. Usually, if there’s a watermark, you shouldn’t use it as that often indicates ownership. With that said, most of the time, if you modify the image so that it’s unrecognizable from the original, then you’re okay. Regardless, it’s always a risk to use someone else’s work, and it doesn’t depend simply on whether you use an image for commercial or non-commercial use.
It’s good habit to use royalty free or commercial use images from specific free image websites like pixbay. That site has high quality images. For more ‘artsy’ images such as characters, there are character design websites (kinda like a dress up game) where the artist allows you to use the final character you created. Sometimes, they specify it for avatar use only, or non-commercial only.
I got hacked on my twitter by a fellow user on Webnovel. Do people genuinely think this kind of thing is OK to do? He basically hacked into my account, just so he could make sure I followed him.
No offense, but that's kind of stalkerish if you ask me.
Is there a way to prevent this sort of thing on here? ( I reported his account of course. )
SarahWeaver6 Someone today told me the same thing happened to her!!! I was so worried to just imagine people going to such lengths. It seems it is a trend nowadays. People are so insecure and their doubts have a way to degenerate. I mean, stalkers always existed. However, with the internet, we have given stalkers a whole new means of trying to control our lives. Think about it, back in the days, they actually had to commit to stalking someone in real life. And obviously, that demanded as much organization as it was dangerous. You could easily get caught. But nowadays, you just learn a few hacking tricks off of YouTube or somewhere and you can access the most intimate information about someone's life.
So scary! I hope nothing of importance (personal info) was to be found on your Twitter. I hope Webnovel does something about this!!!
Ahh, schools on spring break here (Easter Break), and I've finally caught up with grading papers.
No more skype calls for a week. Admist taking my kids for a daily walk I might even find some time to write again.
SarahWeaver6 Yikes, that’s something else. Crazy for sure! Good to see you back though! (: Hope that hacker-stalker got put in their place :x
StenDuring Nice! And oof, skype calls... webex...zoom... google meets... heck I dislike them all now because of quarantine! bleckk, online courses, my bane =_=
Have a good break with your family and writing!
This is why everyone should use password generators secured with a strong password sentence only they know, stay away from unknown sites, don't download stuff outside official sources, and stop letting other people use your devices. And the most important thing: Use 2 Factor Authentication everywhere it is available. It might seem like a hassle in the beginning, but the pros outweigh the cons.
On a better note: I finished page 28 or so of the graphic novel version. Only doing traditional for right now, mostly because I can't afford a drawing tablet.
i'm bored to death
Sollkiri Create a thread for this.
Today, someone told me one of my story arcs had somewhat did a rather accurate predictions on the current issues that happened these few weeks, and I have absolutely no idea about that when I wrote that arc happened ago, now I read it again, the similarity and accuracy are so scary...
I feel that this is not the first time this kind of thing had happened, maybe I'm actually writing a book of prophecy... Haha.
