  • Why are most MC's beta AF???

I have started to read Chinese novels about 2 years ago, all's good but after reading my first one I realized that most of the Mc's are beta AF, and the most beta of all is the most powerful useless abandoned son or whatever.
Why do all of them behave like that, and then there's all the blushing nose rubbing and not knowing if the gonn laugh or fking cry. Then there is the "I'm gonn beat you cause this girls likes you and stuff, our goddess can't be with some1 like you" sh*t, WHO SPEAKS LIKE THAT? WHO BEHAVES LIKE? WHAT F-ING BETA ANTAGONISTS DO YOU HAVE. my basic question is this a thing in china or what ? help me understand cause I cringe when I read this stuff. you do not realize how hard this must annoy me so that I make an account and then find the forum just to complain about this.

Define "beta". Because according to my definition of beta, Chinese MC of most novels I read is extremely the opposite and is exactly that I like it.

On the second part of your claim, have you considered the age at which the stories pass?

pat pat Have a cookie, friend :cookie:

You've obviously had a hard time dealing with this whole thing. According to Deathblade, 'face' is a huge thing in China. Reputation and pride could be considered a part of 'face', but not to the extent of beating someone up just because their 'Goddess' likes someone else. I believe authors simply use that common method to 'spice things up' by adding a new antagonist.

As for the 'rubbing nose' and 'blushing' bits, I believe those are an author's (failed) attempts at making their (perverted) MC look like they have a modicum of shame.

(Live with the cringe. Let it envelop you and become one with you. Soon, you shall no longer think of concepts like 'cringe' and 'shame' :))

I kind of get what you mean but the more you read these novels you somehow get used to it. But I have one question for you my friend, do you read the details of those books or you just add them. I suggest you leave Wuxia and xianxia themed novels and go too modern setting novels. Just a friendly suggestion.

Gudnessa I do read then, the abandoned son I read until he got so beta that I couldn't take it, TMA I read like 1k chaps but couldn't anymore, actually quite a few I started reading but just couldn't power through all the bullshit. I like stories that can actually sustain their world, everything has to be connected, even if you don't mention stuff I want the story to have a world that can exist even if our MC is not there. there are a lot that unless the MC looks at them they don't exist. LIke TMA where the currency is some bones but that is not sustainable.

dotaislife Have you read History's Strongest Senior Brother on volare? That seems like something you'd enjoy :)

dotaislife if you dont want bullshit mc Then read Warlock of the Magus World. No bullshit story and very very very nice world build

Abandon son is a typical beta novel that sells to new reader. If you get bored of those, you can try more atypical stories such as "Release that Witch", "Triller Paradise".

dotaislife HSSB (History's Strongest Senior Brother) , Virtual World: Peerless White Emperor, Shadow Hack , History Number One Founder, The Strongest System, Super Gene, The Strongest Gene, Monster Paradise, Devil Cage, The World Online, Commanding Wind and Cloud, Library of Heavens Path, My Cold and Elegant CEO Wife, My Father in Law is Lu Bu and other that i don't remember.

Just read these, i can't guaranteed that those are your liking but at least you can avoid something like "I'm gonna beat you cause this girls likes you and stuff, our goddess can't be with someone like you". But for some note Wuxia and xianxia themed novels has high chance that would happen because the "common sense" in that novel is the law of juggle. Modern themed one also has it but sometimes it's because love rivals.

In my sense of literature those "beta" are "spices". It's good if add it in moderation in building conflict but it would gone bad if you add it too much, too frequent and too bland (too cliche). If you expect healthy love struggle which not involved with too much fighting and killing go and read romance themed novel, if you read Chinese novel you can expect 60% encounter those if there are "harem" and both male and female lead tag on them. Well 99% if hare tag where spotted.

dotaislife I don't know why but I'm laughing while reading your thread....... Cause you know that's what the author want to play their plot.....

Ebu8b I noticed that difference too when reading Japanese and Chinese novel at the same time.....

Actually each country has their own typical MC trope.

China - Reincarnation from previous life and got the body of a guy so weak with the same name.
You can even add some spice on it like the MC is a master alchemist , master swordsman , immortal in the previous life and retain his/her memories for the cheat.

Korea - Reincarnation but his soul travel back in time from his own body earlier where he/she is weak.
You can even add some spice on it like the MC is a common soldier with high exp on wars , master swordsman but got betrayed by a companion , immortal in the previous life and retain his/her memories for the cheat.

Japan - Reincarnation but this time the MC always gets hit by Truck-san and reincarnated into another world.
Always getting ran over by all types of vehicle but 90% of the time it's Truck-san.

dotaislife you should give Er Gen's novel a try, if u want a deep story(sometimes dark, melancholy) and a likeable mc.

pretty sure most CN MC are rather more alpha than beta, if you speak about JN then yes most MC are rather beta.
there is also the problem of some cultural difference, maybe in china it's the most typical way to react.
every novel have it's cultural influence from the author, and especially on CN, JN, KN, these typical trope is very strong.

try to read, Experimental Log of the Crazy Lich, and Release That Witch, those are the reason I came to qidian.
not much usual trope from chinese novel.

dotaislife It's been my experience that most guys who think they are "alpha" are really just a** holes.
