Can someone please explain the point system and why points are earned instead of coins. Where do the points go and what do they do. Can they be consumed or are do they just carry on accumulating. A response would really be helpful.

Point system is the new reward system that allows you to buy vouchers to either reduce coin use or read various book mediums (comic, ebook, novel) for free for a set frame of time.
To get points just read alot for the time reward or watch ads in stories having the coin bag in the upper right.
To find your total points go to your profile on the app and click Store.
Cheapest point reward is fast passes at around 2k, most expensive is site wide free reading for 7 days at 20k.
