I think what we need here is compromise.
On one hand, I understand that readers can't possibly afford to buy so many chapters, and that it is difficult to keep up with your favorite stories or comics, especially with only three fast passes a day. And for those who want to binge read, or catch up on a story that already has hundreds of chapters locked, it's pretty discouraging.
On the other hand, it sometimes feel as if some of the demands for free stuff is too much. The idiom "I give you an inch and you demand for a foot" comes to mind. While I sympathize that 3 fast passes is not enough, I see people demanding for...what, 15 fast passes a day? That's a bit much. Maybe increase it to 5 fast passes a day, and bring back the weekend bonus (10 during weekends), and that would be good. I don't know. But some of the demands do feel absurd. "I want to read a lot more, but I can't afford to! Give me more free passes!" As much as I sympathize, that's not how the real world works. No one is obligated to give you anything for free. And if you want to read for free, you need to make concessions, otherwise those who pay get shortchanged. Why should you get to read as much as those who actually pay? That's unfair, no? What's the point of paying when you can read so much for free? Webnovel isn't a charity. They need some way to make money. Now, I do admit that their prices are high, and it's really difficult for people who want to read thousands of chapters to get all the coins they need, even with money, and they should consider giving discounts for people making bulk purchases, especially for single series or specific series. But I see some people with the attitude, "I want to read more, but I can't afford to pay a single cent! Can't you give more free stuff?" and I think that's pretty entitled and naive.
As much as I want to read over a dozen books in a bookstore, I don't demand that the bookshop gives books to me for free just because I can't afford them. Either I put up with it and give up on reading, or I save up for the books. Not demand that the bookshop gives books away for free. If I can't afford it, I go to the library. Now this is why I think increasing more fast passes would be a good idea, but as you all know, you have a limited number of books you can borrow from a library (up to 12, I believe), and you have to return them after three weeks. In Webnovel, fast passes unlock the chapters for you forever. While I'm on board to having more free passes available to readers, the attitude of "more free stuff" does come across as a bit entitled. Of course the amount of freebies you receive should be limited. Otherwise there's no incentive for anyone to pay at all. Nobody is obligated to give you free stuff. Just because I treat you to a drink one or twice doesn't mean you are entitled to demand a free drink from me the next time you see me.
Also, it annoys me further when I see people suggesting that readers go to underground or pirate sites. If you can't afford to read it, or you think the prices are too high, simply don't read it. Vote with your wallet. That doesn't justify resorting to illegal means and stealing from other people, or encouraging pirate sites to steal from readers here. If I can't afford a book in a bookshop, I don't bloody shoplift and steal the book from the store. I just put up with not being able to read it, or I save up for it. It makes no sense to claim "it's all right for me to pirate and steal because I can't afford to pay for it." You won't die if you don't read a story on here. These are ultimately luxury goods and entertainment, not necessities like food and water. On the other hand, people who rely on writing as a livelihood - like MotivatedSloth, who barely makes minimum wage from writing 6 hours a day (sometimes more) to keep up daily updates - suffer and might starve to death if you decided that you're going to enjoy the products of his labor without paying for it. Keep in mind, I am not saying writers automatically deserve to be paid for writing alone. If you don't like his or her work, then don't pay for it. Don't read it. But regardless of whether you think his or her work is trash or isn't worth your money, that doesn't justify stealing or pirating it. Just don't read it. If you resort to stealing his or her work even though you deride the standard of his or her story, that means there's something about it that appeals to you, or that you enjoy it, otherwise you wouldn't bother. At least don't just callously disregard the labor he or she puts into it, enjoy the fruits or entertainment he or she provides, and then turn around and claim he or she doesn't deserve to get paid, when it's all really just an excuse for you to get your daily dose of entertainment for free.
At the end of the day, I think what we do need is a compromise here. Some sort of in between. Yes, Webnovel needs to lower the prices and make available more free passes, but readers also have to be less entitled and unreasonable, and stop acting as if Webnovel is obligated to give more free stuff, or threaten to run off to pirate sites just because they can't afford to pay and want to read for free.
