Morgan_Ring So, despite Webnovel not actually owning the novels
Webnovel does actually own the novels. Whether it's the Chinese novels or the original novels (if you sign a contract with them, you hand over your rights and ownership of your novel to Webnovel in exchange for royalties and the potential for media adaptations), Webnovel and its parent company, Qidian, own the rights. Those stories they don't own the rights to, do not have any premium chapters and do not require fast passes or coins to unlock. And there are plenty of them. Just check out Kazesenken's stories, for example. They are all free because he didn't want to sign a contract with them.
Morgan_Ring make it futile for people who want to read for free. Honestly, the author's would get both more money
How are authors supposed to get more money if they allow people to read for free? That makes no sense whatsoever. Also, many stories here are available for free so how exactly would they get more readers even if they use another site? It doesn't make a difference. It honestly sounds like you are complaining because you can't read premium stories for free and because "you can't afford to waste money buying coins."
Webnovel is not perfect and they certainly can be more reader-friendly, but a lot of the complaints seem to be based on "I can't read x story for free!" than any legitimate issue.
This may be anecdotal, but I earn absolutely zero by posting on another site or self-publishing. At least here I can get the minimum guaranteed sum of $200 a month. Also, I seem to have a lot more readers here than I ever did on Royal Road or Fictionpress. While I can't speak for other writers, I can personally say that your statement
Morgan_Ring Honestly, the author's would get both more money and readers (judging from collections and contributions) if they were to self-publish or use another site.
is not true, at least for my case.
