  • Writers are underappreciated by society

It's safe to say that writers are underappreciated by society. Writing competitions should at least have a winning prize of 100K USD up to a million a year. Even E-SPORTS have bigger prizes and they just play games while we build worlds that they play unto.

The only way an author gets appreciated in society is that only if his/her book is a movie or video game, gets hired to be a screenwriter, or create his own publishing. I hate it, I hate it, I hate it! Even if you CLAIM your book is best selling, doesn't mean you're cool in their eyes. It's just 'Meh' for them as if they can write up to 400 pages.

RamdevGC Just because you can churn out 400 pages worth of crap doesn’t make you a qualified writer...

As for writing competitions, once the so called ‘books’ on this website start raking in billions worth of profits den maybe $1m cash prizes will become a thing.

Actually, they quite are. They have their own industry, ffs. Why do you think that Writing exists as a course in college? Just because you don't get your hand shook and balls fondled every time you publish a chapter doesn't mean that you are underappreciated. Just because you don't receive an incentive for having written some big remix of the dictionary doesn't mean that the industry itself is left in the dust. There's more to Writing than novels and prizes.

Plus, in E-Sports, there's more to it than just playing a game. They represent companies, countries, and many more. Compare that to your famous writer, who just writes as their own unit. There's no incentive to support someone who wouldn't give anything in return. E-Sports bring in potential revenue from its spectators, which in turn incentivizes companies to pool their money into the sport, which in turn makes the prize pool rise. There're intricacies in the E-Sports industry that overshadow the Writing Community in more ways than one.

SomethingLikeDeSun The webnoveling scene has constructed an "echo chamber" for all the wannabe book authors. Posting content isn't what makes you a successful writer...or a qualified writer. It just bypasses the screening process that is normally done by the publishing company and professional editors. There always were some people that had the money to self-publish in hard-copy but they were a tiny minority.
Webnoveling makes everyone that bothers to post content of any type an "author". And then the hundreds of thousands (or even more?) of "authors" expect to be treated like actual selling professionals.....without selling at all....
E-sports are dumb but the players have some kind of skill and have passed a qualifying process. Actual skill is involved.

        This.

It's easy to call yourself an "author" if all you do is slap some words together and "publish" it online. It takes actual skill to rise above the sea of mediocrity and establish yourself as an actual author.

Not everyone deserves to get paid for their stuff. Heck, maybe my stuff is hot garbage. But I can try and get myself noticed in this platform. Just have to hope for the best.

MokouFriedChicken Webnoveling isn't useless. The first thing someone gains by publishing in this manner is the free editing support/commentary by the readers.
I hope you can keep improving you'll eventually get to publish books properly.

xcares Yeah well not all “authors” are ready for it. Especially when if you publish on web you need to be ready to be criticized by some and loved by some. I know a Webnovel “author” who diss people family because he didn’t like the comments and wrote a note as chapter how he r*** the comment writer family... That’s the standard for author then I’m happy they are under appreciated.

That's the internet for you. If you can't take an insult, you don't belong in the greater part of the web.
