What mainly affects the continuation of a translation is two factors:
- Translator condition.
Naturally if a translator is sick, injured, living in a war zone these factors affect wether or not they'll maintain a schedule. Most translators will have comments either in the chapters or in the comments/reviews if something particularly negative is affecting their ability to translate.
- Profitability
This is more on webnovels side and is independent of how well received a book is. Plain fact is you could be a book in the top fifties but if 90% of your fan base is using fast passes then the chances the translation is to be dropped is actually higher than a book that averages rank 150 but only sees 10% of its reader base using fast passes.
It's all about how much revenue it generates. Its popularity helps of course to some degree but at its baseline popularity is rather immaterial if only a small percentile of said fan base is using coins to buy chapters/gifts.
Now this, as cktalon has pointed out, is a simplification. There are loads of factors that we readers have no way to check that affects this profitability, but in short form: rank is meaningless when faced with a Fandom that can't be bothered to support a book in any meaningful way. And no, rank, stars and reviews are only the tip of the iceberg when determining its success.
