What would you like to expect in a villain?

Here's some things to think about.

1) If there's a main character in a novel that is a villain, what would you like to see in him/her?

2) Would you expect him/her to have a twisted or sad past?

3) Even if he/she is a villain, would you mind him/her showing empathy in some part in the later chapters?

4) Last and least of all, do you like to read a main character that is actually the main villain in the novel?

I like villains that have personality, plans to do good but due to circumstances or ideology is forced to do evil, kinda like thanos
If the author can pull it off
There should be someone the villain should feel empathetic about, if none the villain would feel cheap and more like an actor.
That really depends, I like evil MC that are in the grey area, those who do evil stuff with good goal in mind. For example thanos, light yagami or lelouche.
What not to do: In ring of chaos, the MC in that novel is pure evil, its a very shallow from of writing that its cartoonish and unrealistic. The MC just kills or rapes anyone if he feels like it, he got no redeemable qualities, I dont even know why people like it.
