They want to sell chapters ? No Problem BUT make sure to give the readers a good quality translation.
Slapping premium price tag on shitty quality translation are dick move. This would make precedent that releasing half assed mtl to boost your chapter release speed are acceptable. When that happen the entire translation community would infected with speedy yet trashy translation.
It's been five years since i started reading chinese webnovels and honestly i was sick of the usual translation rate of 7 chaps per week of most of the novel on WW.
And when qidian(webnovel.com) came into the business and offered a translation rate of 25 chaps per week, i immediately became its loyal supporter. But like they say in novel ' A bucket of cold water' was poured on me when the translation rate was decreased.
So after 5 years i finally became sick of waiting for 24 hours for just 1 chapter which i have to unlock after watching a 30 sec ad, and now i have decided to learn chinese.... Hah solution to all problems, unlimited novels, no premium chapter sh*t, no worries about the translation rate or its quality.... And its not gonna take more than a year

It is understandable we readers complaining about the quality of translations. But it comes down to the translator himself and how he works. Some are naturally good at vocab and writing while others not so. This can be solved somewhat through editors but on a massive level - it is hard. How many projects can you monitor when there is like 130 titles in webnovel.com.
Its like a triangle.
You can get quality chapters at low release rate.
You can higher release rate but the quality may take a toll.
You can pay to get one of them properly. Quality or release rate.
But if we are paying then, in our mind the quality should increase with release rate. That's what the money is for. More quality translators on a single novel can increase the rate but the payment required would be high for a novel. And not every translator is willing to do so.
So finding a balance is the best.
Threetimess Like you said they claim they are training translators. So hopefully things improve.
Let's just hope after the training we get better quality translations at a higher release rate at a reasonable SS.

Hiffume I am started losing interest in LoHP since the second arc was pendulum story. Same thing, same face slap. Its enjoyable but not as much compared to the amzingly written first arc. So when I missed nearly a week of translations premium happened. Now I am just waiting out until I get free time to restart.
RtW looks huge now as I am waiting for free time. Heard its good and fantasy element(something I love) so I am going to wait on it since starting it will most likely get me addicted and I will mess up my sleep and work schedule.
As for Bringing the nations husband home, its well written. But its frustrating. I could not stop my urge to go on a hulk rampage after reading 200 chapters. The MC and FMC need serious whacking. I could not take it anymore.(In a good way lol).
So the premium novel I follow is The Strongest System haha. Not the best but its funnny.
Now I feel like premium is an amazing de-addiction program for many. I still got 1200 SS so I can read a couple of premium titles like LoHP and RtW (If I finish the non-premium chap that is) when I have free time.

We're being charged approximately 8 times more.

Netflix has a huge customer base and they are burning money at this moment. They buy materials.
Likewise, WW is rumored to buy translation rights from the publishing company and translates them. They then divide the income based on page views (or that's what I have heard). Their income is also heavily dependent on patreon. As they are a group of translators like a group of friends, a subscription model is very appropriate for them and we can expect a future Crunchyroll or Netflix style model from them. Also, they control the number of novels translating and prefer to choose quality ones.
(Netflix is huge, while novel community is not so now)I also recently got a hint that they want to install in site Patreon like system instead of using an external site. So there is a high chance that we can see patreon model release and locked chapters in WW (similar to premium but with more tiers.) Also a currency that has no monetary value but promoting novels.
So as a result of webnovel.com the competitive spirit has been ignited. Just they are really slow at it.
Looks like Wuxiaworld has introduced VIP ad-free system. $5 for a month for ad-free usage. They also built in-house patreon chapters which you buy.
In essence, they have the same system as Premium in webnovel.com but it seems to be worded nicely. They have a rule in which the advance chapter count cannot exceed 2x the free chapters that week or month. So the locked chapters will not accumulate. If you subscribe to a novel by paying $5 or $10 you get to stay 2-3 chapters ahead of others in that month. The same as patreon system. Their translation rate is lower that webnovel.com but atleast they implemented this as a progressive improvement.
The competition is pressuring them to improve haha.
