Each one of the characters in the story has their own thoughts and motives. There just happens to be multiple partners for the protagonist. Did you end up finding something you could enjoy?

Not a romance tho. The best Romance/ thriller/ revenge story I know is gankutsuou the count of monti christo. OMG its a masterpiece its an anime and it has a slow start but my god its a masterpiece other stories should take notes.
