Women, mostly, have a clear idea of how a man shall be: strong enough to protect her. In modern times, it means being RICH. Being tall is a physical advantage.

Men usually don't talk as much as women do. So it's something we women find remarkable about being a man. Also, men are taught to hide their feelings because showing feelings is a girly thing.

Women absolutely prefer RICH, TALL, POWERFUL, SILENT AND SERIOUS MEN OVER THE REST. If he shows his male aggressiveness and dominance with sardonic remarks, arrogant behavior, or spanking a rival, it's okay.

The same way men usually prefer small, beautiful, sweet, funny, caring, and maternal women because they believe it's girly features.

I'm not talking about my opinion but about psychological studies about human behavior.
But... Some people are out of the curve or just got over these easy stereotypes. But it's hard to find novels with non-cliché portraits of the perfect romantic partner or the perfect girl.

Anyway, I wrote a romance (is on WN) where the guy is kind of richer than the girl (okay, because she's broke, so it's easy to be richer than her), but both have dominant personalities. He couldn't impress her with his money or influence (he's not a CEO, but a famous plastic surgeon). His secretaries are not after him. The second lead is not better than him.
And guess what? It flopped. LOL.

SrtaA well that's true, here only cliche plots works in writing prompt contest too they teach how to write about evil siblings and stepmom and how to hide the hidden child.
Like literally just copy some plot from the famous Chinese novel and the novel of that author would be famous there are like 100s of novel I can tell with supper similar plots and people are more then happy to read them, even c drams have better plot then that💁

The ones with bit different plot are all on long hiatus 🤦
But then there are tonnes of webtoo out there where characters are supper awesome.
Even novels on novelnavar(they are Korean so mlt) are good too..

I don't know the demographic of the readers here, but I'm guessing there are a lot of young readers. So they tend to be less critical of these cliches.

But I guess this doesn't answer how these cliches came to be in the first place.

Sadly, most stories here that are remotely innovative with the cliche or could be considered an original concept, flops.

WN limit promotion of such stories because majority of readers aren't reading them. Since readers aren't reading such stories, the amount of energy to invest for the finish may be stalled, leading to a hiatus or drop.

Damn, all of these are cliches that I don't wanna read. They're so many of them in webnovel that can't be keep count!

Well, what can I say? If WN favors copies of Chinese novels with cliches Chinese audience picks, is because their staff is Chinese, and most of their readers are in the Eastern countries. It's how they see the market.
They aim at the short-term profit, and if it's selling, they replicate the formula until it stops selling.
First, it was the rough CEO trope, then the endless pampered wife trope, then the mafia lord trope, then the werewolf trope.
But if it sells, it's because most women indulge, even if secretly, in those fantasies.

I'll say this from experience. When I wrote romance books on time traveling idols and parallel timelines, wn didn't promote them much. The moment I wrote a cliche CEO novel... BAM! It was heavily promoted, got banners and crossed 1k fans.

Webnovel is reluctant to promote novels which they deem as 'commercially unviable'. If they think it won't make money, they won't promote. It's a sad reality coz there are tons of hidden gems out there which go unnoticed.
