For a slightly different recommendation, check out Dies the Fire by SM Stirling. The book starts out in Oregon in the spring of 1998. Suddenly, for no apparent reason, all modern technology (electricity, guns, cars, etc) all stop working. Modern society starts disintegrating fairly quickly as people run out of food, and the book follows people who eventually become the leaders of various groups of survivors. Essentially, they are creating new kingdoms on top of the ruins of the modern USA.
