And now I thought that rather than just telling you what not to do, I'm gonna compile a short list of do's and don'ts of titles, in MY opinion.
1, Don't use 'The' at the end. There's a lot of titles, where the author decided to go with the definite article, and it's mostly in regards of the main character, which brings me to
2, Don't describe the MC in the title. This should be obvious, but titling your book with 'The Best Prankster" or "The Top Thief of the Land of Bliss" sound super boring (Don't look these up I literally came up with the on the spot.
3, I understand, that in the east, it's pretty popular to form sentence-titles, like famous ones are: "That time I got reincarnated as a Slime", or "Blessings to this Wonderful World (Knosuba)", but in reality, those work best in that niche. If you're putting your work out to a certain culture group, then it's okay, but if you want other readers as well, then I'd recommend you don't make titles like that.
4, Don't use superlatives, or anything similar: Super, Supreme, Best, Strongest, etc are super boring for titles. Sure, they sound cool, and unless you want your primary audience to be around 13, than it's okay, but generally don't. Again, unless it's a very important plot point, taht you'd like to emphasize. Compare "Super Fist Man" with "One Punch Man". Which would you pick?
Okay, enough Don'ts, here are the Do's:
1, Take your full story into account. Are you writing a Fantasy? Is it Sci-fi? Pick a title that would suit the genre. E.G.: Imagine if the Lord of the Rings were titled: "Ultimate Alliance of the Ring" It does make sense, but that's more of a sci-fi title. What about the main topic of your story? Is it about adventure? Dungeon crawling? Space battles? You have options, try to depict them in the title.
2, If there is a primary concept in your story, that will be the driving force of the plot, try to implement it in the title. I hate to bring this up, but it's a decent title: 'Sword Art Online'. Short, and to the point. You'll know what the story is going to be about, mostly, just based on the title. Another one, and I know most of my references are anime/manga, but idc. 'Food Wars'. Obvious, and you'll have a general understanding of the story before you even read it.
3, Contradicting my previous point: Don't use only that one concept in the title. Say, your story focuses on the development of one's chakras. Don't title it 'Chakra', cuz it'll sound stupid, and it might be placced into the esoteric section of your local library. Go for something like 'Chakra Horizon' (Now I realize that this was a horrible idea, but that's the best I can make of it.
4, You can make your title around a concept, like betrayal, and title it something like 'Betrayed and Left for Dead' or something. Don't be afraid of experimenting. You'll have a bunch of ideas, only some of which are gonna be decent.
Okay, I'm out.
