A new author here and person in general to webnovel!
To authors/readers out there,

Do name origins matter to you?

For example, can the name Raiden (Japanese origin) and Arthur (English origin) be used in the novel or do all the names have to have the same origin?

I’m an overthinker and small little details like this bother me so much! LOL or you can just tell me to do whatever I want and it just depends on how of a good author you are hahaha

Much love, Skymask

To answer your question, I think it also depends on ur world building. Lets say a dude whose name is Mike Stewart. He is born on a medieval europe inspired fantasy country. But its also weird for a guy name Ling Gu or Shin Yen to be born from that place same as Mike.

But its possible if Ling Gu is born from a country who is inspired in ancient chinese culture. Both can coexist in the same world. Or if ancient japanese inspired country, he has japanese name.

For me, if its eastern fantasy with chinese culture and settings then I prefer it with chinese names. However, I'm not sure for others since I have seen translators replacing chinese with western names (usually this gets negative reviews). In your case if the settings is in japan then its important the names are japanese or if its in china then chinese. If its transmigration or isekai in medieval europe then i think western names are fine.

By the way i think its fine to mix Raiden with any western name is fine since its almost sounds western

Awesome, thanks for your response! I appreciate it ❤️

The beautiful thing about fiction is that it is disconnected from reality. It can be anything you want it to be, and this can apply to naming and naming conventions.

It can be an entirely new name, unique in every way, with even a completely new system of language (LOTR does this splendidly).

In short, no, unless you're writing a story about the real world, then you should probably think a bit about name origins in order for it to feel real to your readers.

LordSkymask Personally I put lots of thoughts behind characters names, there's many times where I mindlessly name a character but, in most cases I'd do a big search and work on choosing the best name I believe I can find sometimes even create a
An entirely new name just for that one character,

Names can sometimes give a special addition to the character's general vibe and a flavor to the story, it could even get people to like a character just by the name.

As for names origins, I think having a suitable name for a character depending on their origins or the story's original place is a very good idea, but it's okay if you don't always follow that rule for example when you believe it's too late to change the name of the character.

( This is just my opinion)
