  • Overlord_Venus And by the way, I'm with you on this. The moment I get to a poorly written character who begins their statement with: "Oh, you're [other culture here]? Never mind, I won't hire you," I'm ready to drop it UNLESS the author sets this character up as a terrible human being who experiences a proper downfall immediately thereafter.

    Which I've actually seen!

It's a fine line to draw, for sure. "a world without"'s entire premise is the societal breakdown caused by an "angel" appearing and claiming one religion was "right", but too bad, the whole of humanity had lost the right to go to heaven. A few "miracles" are thrown in to convince the more weak-minded members of society.

In other words, it could, for all they know, be aliens performing a mass social experiment on humanity. "We don't know," yet. Nationalism is explored realistically in the novel but certainly not applauded or supported. The "superiority" of certain cultures is referenced only in the locality of different systems of beliefs: western society has a strong Abrahamic faith underpinning, whereas eastern doesn't.

So naturally the eastern peoples are a bit more immune to the idea that "there is no afterlife" because many weren't expecting one in the first place. There are notable exceptions and zealotry abounds.

But you won't find the MCs discriminating against people, or, if they do, getting called out or having it identified as wrong.

So far, we try to give a balanced view that all humans are monsters if pushed far enough, but there are lots of shiny gems everywhere.

"a world without" meets all your criteria: a realistic world reaction to the sudden announcement that "God is Real, but he's forsaken you all". Whether it's true or not is left up for the nations to decide, and, of course, chaos unfolds around a Japanese exchange student stuck in D.C. during the ensuing riots.

She, alone, has a power - so it fits your magical realism, but it's not a system. Her weak-to-strong arc is based on learning how to circumvent her own power so she can control the collateral damage she leaves in her wake.

She's a nerd who'd rather be writing code, but she's got a long plumbing pipe as her primary weapon and she's constantly at risk - and constantly fighting. Book 1 arc is all about learning how to not wreck her body despite it instinctively trying to keep her alive at all costs.
