  • SpilledInk Cultivation chat room is good I'll agree with that.

I've already read solo levelling and many of the copies but I don't really enjoy the 'chosen one with a system' type novel anymore it's oversaturated now. Though I will say solo levelling is at least one of the better ones.

Dark_Scholars bl isn't really my thing but I will try it.

    • Disclaimer this isn't addressing all site uses or pointing at any specific novels.

To be honest, the negative influence that I consider most alarming is the rampant sexism and racism in a lot of web novels. Sure these things, if done well, can be an interesting struggle for the MC or a chance at character growth but it's never used that way. Usually, sexism is used to 'justify' the harem and racism is just casually there. Add this with the troupe of the murder hobo protagonist has led to a toxic community and although people do pick up on racism (though it's still a huge problem), sexism is ignored almost entirely especially in cultivation novels whether they are translation or original. Even when it's explained that women are or can be just as powerful as men high amounts of sexism is still present, despite it not making sense (e.g. in a so-called 'do eat dog world' would women just take the sexism they receive or would they do something about it). Furthermore this is especially problematic when in a reincarnation/ transmigration/ isekai novel where even the modern-day character is still both racist and sexist on many accounts.

This is not only a problem with authors, it has been pushed by a widespread culture of encouraging these types of novels. For instance, if an MC isn't a murder hobo type character the comments will be filled with comments harassing the author over how they made the MC wrong choice, it's like some people don't understand that character development is important. This spills over into sexism as people push for protagonists to 'collect' harem members the relationships of which are often rushed/ forced by the author making all the characters feel hollow and lifeless. Some characters don't even get described further than their body shape or the word 'beauty' showing the depths of writing many novels have sunk to.

Personally, I think that a lot of this could be solved if webnovel deleted racist web novels even if they were translations. Also, I believe that removing the ability of an author to delete reviews would go a long way in helping reduce the overinflation of novel ratings and whilst some may point out that this can lead to spam low-level reviews this happens already in reverse due to the daily missions on the site.

      • All the cultivation novels read the same. Same troupes, same arrogant MC, same no-name side characters, same peerless talent, same pointless provocation of powerful people, same ruthless killing, same 'shameless' face slapping. Its all predictable and boring.

So if anyone has any suggestions on a cultivation novel that isn't terribly basic and predictable I'd appreciate it.
