Tired of all the cliches and tropes in novels? Wanting to vent why they suck and are a disgrace to webnovel culture? Well look no further cause i want to hear all of your complaints! Basically just say all the cliches that you are tired of. I do have a reason for doing this, not just because i am bored or have no life...
In all seriousness i am trying to start a novel, and i have an idea that requires a wide knowledge of cliches. Would love some help for creating a mediocre novel at best but secretly hopes its good
Webnovel tropes
female protagonists all just being stories with romance as the only focus.
honestly, I love romance, but it doesn't make sense why female protagonists only exist to end up with the dream guy and all that. :/
also,,, not exactly cliche (though I do see it a lot in the original section) but more of the fact that I come on this site to read stories set in China/with Chinese culture and it just makes me sort of uncomfortable to read stories where main characters are set in a world with asian culture but have names like "Richard" or "Emma". just... no thank you. go either 100% western or 100% eastern; in between is sort of... hm.
yaoyueyi very good points. Actually gave me some inspiration just now, thank you
Why not start with African character like those in movie God must be crazy
SweetsTomato i already have an idea for the mc and an idea for the story so i would rather not overhaul everything
Dontlookdown
Just when the mc is about to be overpowered boom! A sudden breakthrough! And the mc's power completely overwhelms the opponent..
And after he defeats his enemy another one shows up and they keep coming one after the other, usually is caused by offending someone when the mc is still building up strength.
Dontlookdown
You're confusing tropes and cliches.
You simply cannot write a story without tropes. Every thing you can think of, be it character type, setting, plot, plot twist, etc, chances are some one else has already thought of it, and there's already a trope named for it.
Cliches have many definitions, but the one I'm going for is that they are a trope or combination of tropes that have been used so many time that using them leads people to think you're lazy and lack creativity.
Listing all cliches here is impossible. You're better off googling. That said, it's not really necessary to avoid cliches. If you can take one and add some twists to it to make it fresh, then people won't mind. And failing that, even if your plot is derivative and unoriginal, if your writing is good enough, people will still like your work.
ImBloo didnt realize that was the definition of trope. And i did try googling it. I found a helpful site, but it didn't have a list of them. Im not trying to make a whole list anyway, since i have read a fair amount of novels and am familiar with a good amount of cliches. I also don't plan on avoiding cliches since i have an idea on how to use them. Thanks for the feedback, and feel free to list a cliche you know too. I promise that i will use it responsibly
Dontlookdown frankly, I can't stand novels with either transmigration, rencarnation or a tutor figure in an object the MC have found. I'm not a fan of system novels, but I normally enjoy then when the system is not focused in combat (like in The Mech Touch or Gourmet Food Supplier)
